If you were to design your own polisher what features would you like ?
 
DA's:
Spindle lock rather than wrench to change backing plates.
Slightly thinner body to facilitate gripping with handles off.
True variable speeds vs. number of preset speeds.
More forced rotation vs vibration in a random orbit.
 
easily replaceable parts that get used often like on/off switch and variable speed switch, be nice to be able to replace those without complete disassembly, as in use a small flat head to pop switches out,use spade connectors to quickly disconnect/reconnect and be able to contine polshing in under 10 mins.
i would like a small DA polisher using a 1.5"-2" polishing pad so you can polish interior trim peices,wheels, and certin spots you cant hit with a normal polisher is what i would like,

Quick-release maybe. The way the PC is put together a spindle lock is out of the question. Unless you use a wrench. . . lol.

Definitely won't happen. Where would you put the motor?

Wouldn't be too hard to accomplish. Just find varisistor that can handle 7-10 amps, and has the resistance you need.

At a quick cursory glance, I believe the PC could be permanently modified to produce forced rotation. The motor may not be powerful enough, though, and wouldn't you want to be able to switch it back?

That's easy to find in an air-powered version.

That's easy to find in an air-powered version.
i dont use air tools, too expensive to have the air compressor needed,and hard to have a huge compressor when your mobile, so yeah id prefer an electric one. most air tools require like 3-5cfm at 90psi with some compressors your really not going to get that output. and i have not found a air d/a polisher for 1.5-2" pads. all i have seen are 3"
 
A LCD screen that displays DA speed, and some buttons to adjust speed. Something on top near handle. My griot DA has the speed on the back. I have to stop the machine, and life it up to adjust the speed. I can't really just feel it.

DA should come with a longer cord as standard. i shouldn' have to pay extra money for that. what am I gonna polish with a 8ft cord. i need an extention no matter what.

Nice, short list.

Here's a few things off the top of my head...

  • A soft non-marring surface around the head of the unit like the G110v2 or even better, Richard Lin came out with a foam strip you could tape around a PC or any tool head that's round with a smooth surface.
  • Ergo design for your hands on both the head and the body especially for one-handed use as I'm the biggest proponent of doing as many steps as possible by machine versus hand including machine waxing.
  • Switches located for ease of use and speed of use...
  • More ability to maintain pad rotation without giving up the characteristic that enables the pad rotation to be 100% stopped otherwise we're talking about the Flex 3401
  • Rubber power cord like Flex polishers that won't kink and then retain the kink...
  • Built in GFI like the Shurhold

What about a random orbital with the ability to 'lock' the rotation and turn it into a rotary at the flick of a switch? Basically it will move gears to make it just spin or to jiggle.
 
I would love to see the speed control placed where your thumb could get to it instead of the bottom... Like the flex or a rotary. I adjust speeds and that would be much easier.

An extra small machine that could use 1.5 or 2 inch pads would be pretty darn cool too.
