The splatter sucks. I use wheel woolies. When used in combination with sonax full effect the results are awesome.

I use gloves and stand to the side of the wheel away from the direct line of fire.

I usually come out completely spattered after cleaning the barrels on my ML350's wheels. I have to make sure I am wearing clothes that I don't mind getting filthy.
