Deck/Fence Overspray on Black Mustang

I finally am getting to work on this. I detailed the car for the owner upon delivery. It's an 04 GT Mustang with 12/k and is in great shape. Unfortunately, 3 days later, the neighbor had a contractor spray their deck and cedar fence with sealant and the overspray went everywhere.

Well, now it's going to be settled in small claims court and I got the go-ahead to start removing the spray.

Process: Washed and clay during wash. Didn't do much on spray removal. Next, clayed and used Wolfgang Spritz and it started to come off. I have to say, Wolfgang seems to be a better and longer lasting product than Meguiar's for a clay lube (I tried both).

Here's a pic of what you saw in the windshield with the sun in your eyes.

Next, is a down-the-side shot of the spray on the door...this stuff was everywhere on the horizontal surfaces, AND completely on the side the wind blew against.

I gave the Festool a workout and used Pinnacle Paint Cleansing. I used the rotary mode, then switched to random orbital. It did a great job of polishing and cleaning the paint.

Polished and cleaned. I'll be storing the car in my garage for the week, and will finish with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant around mid-week.

I'm keeping detailed logs on time spent, materials used, etc. The Mustang owner will need that for court.

thanks for treating a stang owner so well! That WILL BE the first car I purchase. So what process did the festool do this time? Did you rotary the cleansing lotion then go orbital?
 
Pinnacles paint cleansing lotion is not really abrasive, so pad choice and speed must have made the difference. I thought we were going to need to breakout the polishes.
 
killrwheels: yea, I thought I was going to break out some light compound, or at the very least, Meg's 83. I decided to see what the Festool could do, so I just used Pinnacle and a Meg's 8006 pad. Started in Rotary mode and a speed setting of 4 (don't have a clue what the rpm is on the rotary). I worked the Pinnacle until it started dusting, then switched to random orbital and a speed setting of 3.

I didn't think I needed 83 or compound because the underlying finish was in good shape. Remember, I did a nice polish + wax 3 days before the deck spray event.

I did manage to get the 8006 pad pretty warm in rotary with a fair amount of pressure on the machine.

Good job! That Festool looks like a cool tool. Years ago I sprayed my fence and some overspray got on the wife's car. It was a mess.
 
You did a great job on that car! I'll be the owner feels much better now. Poor guy! I would be sick if that happened to me. When I woke up that fateful morning to find my car's bumper all smashed in I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach! I'm glad that you brought it back to new. :)
 
Now that I think of it, why in the heck is it going to small claims?! That is just so sad that the neighbor isn't readily taking care of this!
 
How you get it off of the windshield and windows?

As a stang owner myself, it was painful to look at those pictures.

It's not the neighbor responsobility that lands on the contractor to make sure no damage would occur to other peoples property imo.
 
Overspray is the reason why I became a member at AG in the first place. When they were building the new tollroad here in Austin, they decided the spray the tollboots during the day. It was some conctrete based spray. Well, of course it went everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. My truck was parked probably about half a mile away and it was full of white specs. Over 200 cars were affected, all people from work. The contractor ended up having to rent a detailing business from Lousiana to come do all the cars. They spend weeks doing them. I went and checked it out and it was one shady business they had going. Dirty rags, polished with no name on it, big wads of clay laying around. They put me on the list of affected cars, but I turned it down.

I bought some stuff, send them the bill and got a $60 check.
 
That sucks, I actually had to do some oversprsay on my car today, my friend was spray painting parts for his truck while I was installing some stereo, and I didn't realize that he was doing it until it was to late, luckly it all came out with a little ultra fine clay without removing any of the wax. Great job, that looks like it was a !@#$ to do. I would have killed someone if it was that bad.

Clay Bar + Wolfgang Detail Spritz. That was easy to check to see if I got it all off. The paint was tough because the only way to see if the spray was gone was to look down the side and have a shop light.

The reason for small claims court. The neighbor had contracted with a franchised company to seal the deck and fence. They are listed in the Better Business Bureau and are insured. Both the contractor and the franchisor are extremely unresponsive to phone calls and e-mail, so my customer finally decided to file a claim in court. The sadness is this could have/should have been resolved right after the incident. The contractor said he had a detailer (and my customer talked to that person), but the guy was going to use a wool pad and rotary to remove the spray. Boy, that would have been a sight.

The local Ford dealer gave my customer an estimate of $1,600 for replacing plastic pieces and detailing.

Just curious as to which plastice pieces on the stang? I'm assuming the plastic wiper dash that the wipers sit out of? Maybe the black strip that sits under the side window?
 
IMO, the detail you did 3 days before save that car. Nice work.

Yes, the cowl piece, the outside mirrors, and there is a trim piece on the convertible top that wraps around the trunk and rear fenders. It flat black.

So is the Better Business Bureau going to be informed of this contractor and franchise's having to go to court? That is so sad. I cannot believe that they were so unwilling to deal with the issue and now their whole reputation will suffer for it. Serves them right!

Yep, FloridaNative, she is going to file a complaint with the BBB against the contractor and the franchise. You're right about it being sad. All the contractor had to do was jump on the problem, let my customer remove the spray (which I finally did 2 months later) and re-detail, and be done. But, they chose to stall and be non-responsive.

And now their future business will suffer for it! They should have taken the high road. Not just because it was the right thing to do, but also for their own good. Now their indifference will come home to bite them in the arse! Well, I hope that will learn a lesson from this unpleasant experience.
