I was spaying bug spray on my arms before bike ride, when some of it drift off to the car side mirror. It caused black dots discoloration.

Can the plastic be restored to factory smooth black color?

Something similar just happened to me with "Off" bug spray. I sprayed my arms one of which I had my brand G-Shock watch with a resin band on. I could not get it off. It was permanently "etched". The G-Shock tactical watch proved no match for bug spray.

•DEET (N,N-DIETHYL-M-TOLUAMIDE
CAS# 134-62-3):

-has a solvent effect on most plastics,
paints, and varnishes.

-It is also incompatible with rayon, acetate
or dynel clothing.

•Due to DEET’s solvent effect...
-It may be difficult to return the mirror’s
finish to its former beauty.
-Perhaps a mild polish, or an AIO,
will be of some help. :dunno:

Good Luck; and thanks for the (inadvertent)
heads-up regarding DEET’s harmfulness.

Makes one think twice about spraying on oneself. On a similar note, I read on an RV forum about a guy who got some Deet on the front cap of his trailer, not sure the circumstances whether it was a deliberate or accidental spray, but the end result is it did a number on the decals and also started to lift the decals from the cap. To the OP I have had good luck with Mothers Back to Black to restore plastic trim, though admittedly I have not had Deet sprayed on it.
