Describe your first driving experience.

My very first time behind the wheel was when I was in pre school. They had a long driveway on the side of the building and people would let their kids out of the cars by this entrance on the side where we would be collected by the instructors of the school. While waiting in line to get dropped off, I would sit on my mother's lap and "steer" down the driveway.

First real driving experience was when I was probably 15 and my father took me out to an idustrial park on July Fourth weekend in his 1978 Corvette, pulled into a parking lot and let me take the wheel for a few miles until we hit actual traffic.

First time behind the wheel I was actually like 7 or 8. I remember hearing my parents outside talking and then for some reason my mom came and got me and had me steering an old Corolla while she backed it out of the driveway and pulling back in. At the time I had no idea why it was really happening, but I was excited, although I think my dad's cheeks were clenched so tight you couldn't drive a nail, lol.

First on the road experience was when I first moved to Florida my dad bought a brand new 2002 Mustang GT. One day we went to pick up a package from the office (at the apt complex we lived at) and when we left he handed me the keys and we took a spin around Weston. Driving by a cop (with no license at all) was a nervous experience, but otherwise it was sooo awesome!!:dblthumb2:

My dad bought a 1959 Bugeye Sprite when he was in England. He brought it back with him and I learned to drive with it. I was 8 when he first had me learning to use a clutch. We would go to the Douglas Aircraft parking lot and that's where I learned to drive. By 9 he would get out and I would drive all the way down and back, going up through all for gears, downshifting, turning around and coming back. The parking lot was alongside the runway so it was a little over a mile in each direction.
I was a big kid and those cars are really tiny inside.
At ten years old we rebuilt the engine and trans together. And converted from SU carbs to Webbers, (40DCOE) if anyone remembers that long ago. I still have the Webbers, we took them off when he sold the car.

I remember my first couple of rides. As a baby, I was very collicky (cried a lot) and one of the only things that got me to stop instantaneously was a ride in my old man's 1978 Ford F150, triple blue. Obviously, I was teeny tiny, but I still remember the blue vinyl floors and the smell of that truck. To this day I'm convinced that's what made me an eternal car guy.

3 or 4 years later, I'm a kid jumping up and down in the car (remember those days? That and sleeping on the package tray or in the floor wells...they'd call Protective Services if they saw that anymore). I managed to hit the column shifter and rode my mom's 84 Lincoln Towncar down the street in neutral. Luckily a quick thinking neighbor jumped in and stopped me.

My first drives were the same as someone else mentioned...riding on a parents' lap and getting steering wheel control. I guess I was around 8 or 9 around that time, then I got my first car at 14. When we finally dropped a motor in it, got the brakes fixed and the transmission working, I'd drive that around the block and across the street to get gas.

16 years later I still have her...1970 Monte Carlo...she's just waiting on time and money at this point (me too!).
