Hey guys,

I was wondering what it takes to take detailing from a hobby/obsession to a business. What is required and is it worth the effort? Thanks in advance guys/girls!

I've been trying to start my own business for the last few months and I was definately not ready for it, I thought I was, its not impossible, but it takes some nerves, patience, and a go get attitude, yea and a far amount of money. I've been doing better than I thought I would, but keeping track of clients and finding out what products I want to use and how much I use, when to use, etc, it takes some time to get use to. Advertising is a key, I have business cards, brochures with pricing, and don't wait for the customer to come to you GO TO THEM. I'm thinking about making a website, I think one of the other guyz on this forum has his on business with a website, he seems to be doing pretty well, he has the yellow truck as his avatar, I think it will link you to his site. Other than that I really takes common sense, some business sense, good money management, you have to take risks and determination and patience. As hard as it gets for me sometimes I still love doing it, and seem to always pull through and I'll continuing doing as long as I can. You can't give up once you start.

Justin has a good business going on, hopefully he can chime in here. I am not looking to do this full time or as my life's work. Just a little on the side. I have a few people lined up already, just need to keep practicing. Thanks for the input excessive!:D

I do some detailing on the side. Other than my own 4 vehicles, My in laws I do about 20 per year. Keeps me busy. I do not advertise other than word of mouth.

Thats a good idea.....make detailing fun, and adventurous, for your self, family, and friends
You have to be real good in detailing and knowledgeable to deal with the public....;)

Took me no time.
I had no competition where I am so I started a mobile business. There are 12 real estate agencies, 12 lawyer firms, and a retirement community. Our population is only 20k too. In 3 months I have over 62 clients and I'm looking to hire a part timer. I love my job each and everyday. Only wish I had started this earlier guys.

How did I get so many customers so fast?
I got off my butt and went to their businesses. I've spent 115.00 in cards and that's it in advertising. Being mobile was a major factor. The clients didn't have to reschedule their day or worry about some kid driving their 50k car (or more). Then, I just did a good job. I take a little longer, but wouldn't they if they had the time? The rest is history.
I've learned so much from here and other forums. Ask. Never be afraid to.
Just remember one thing. It's best to try and fail and know than to never try and never no if your dream could have been real.

If anyone has any questions for me, please call me or email me anytime (except 10pm....I get really tired then!)

I'll send you by biz cards and you can tell them "he's the man in South Florida" and I'll do all their loans. Instead of sending clients a goodie basket, I'll give by certificates for a detail courtesy of you, hehe, lol:D . You'd like the Real Estate offices here or business in general, have Lambos and tons of exotics driving around daily, be a Detailers paradise.

Good luck, in our parking garage at the office there's people, something like Pronto-Wash?, that do cars in the garage all day with some kinda of yellow push cart thing.

Here found their site, these are the guys in our office garage, see the company at our mall, movie theatre as well etc. Not sure of the work they do, never really paid attention.

Regarding a website: You can pay to have one done, or with very little effort you can build your on for very cheap. A good web host is www.lowesthosting.com and for free you can get Ewisoft Website builder. It is simple to use.

So how much does a professional detailing job run? If I were to decide to find someone in Dallas to get my car in good condition what should I expect to pay and look for?
