Hey Guys

Im New to this forum, i have been following articles regarding detailing for a while and its been a really informative for me.

So today i was working on my brothers 2009 Toyota Altis Black and as i was claying the hood using Meg Clay bar and Quick Detailer the clay bar turned black. There was slight force which was used to remove over spray and contaminants.
My question is " is it normal for a clay bar to remove paint on a single stage vehicle?"

Any help is appreciated:dblthumb2:
Thanks

I'm sure it was just gunk and not paint, has it ever been Clayed?

You shouldn't see much paint transfer even if its single stage you most likely used too much force or not enough lubrication another probable cause would be that your clay bar was too aggressive...just my eight cents

From this article: Even Show Cars Might Need Clayed

Might just be the contamination

Did you test or know the vehicle is single stage?

It may be road tar you are seeing on the clay. Is the car black?

Yup it's single stage
I had Clayed this car about 4-5 months ago
I used liberal amount of lubricant and only applied force to some parts but in previous clay no paint came off just gunk

This car was however compounded by a local dealership about three weeks ago which left marring for which I'm doing correction with following steps
Wash, clay, compound , polish and sealant
I'm using all Meg products
With porter cable 7424xp with LC pads
except sealant ( tough coat paint sealant by auto finesse)

An easy way to find out would be to completely clay a small section until it passes the baggy test. Then get a clean piece of clay and re-clay it. The clay should remain clean. If not, it's paint.

If it's paint...something ain't right.

Which Meg's clay?

I'm using meg smooth surface clay kit
Ok I will do this test with second clay

So I checked again with clay bar in another section and clay bar picked up grime only no paint in this section
I'm confused
Why paint came off hood with clay bar???

Could this car have been in an accident or wrecked and been repaint in areas?

I have found this one time on vehicle I did. I wash claying a white Sequoia
and I found there were 3 panels that had base clear and the rest had been single stage white (which is traditional with white Toyotas). I had asked the customer it the car was ever wrecked and they said no but they bought it used and it was only one year old. I explained what I had found and said there was a pretty good chance the vehicle was wrecked at some point before they had bought it and whoever repainted it used a base clear.

Hmmm
I bought this car used two years ago
Previous owner said it was accident free
This explains the clay bar mystery I guess
