I have a bit of an odd question that only auto detailers would 1) be able to answer and 2) understand my desire to fix it.
Back Story (Not Essential Reading):
I'm an avid golfer that just recently gave up my membership at a Davis Love course. I walked the course about 4 times a week and eventually became burned out. In November, I played a company golf tourney and haven't played since. The problem is I left my clubs in the trunk of my car untouched for 3 months, and my crappy work car has moisture issues in the trunk. Yeah, I overlooked it. I pulled my clubs out today and noticed rust spots. They are Callaway x22 irons with steel shafts. They were a wedding gift from my wife, so I will throw every car product at it before I replace the shafts.
Test Spot:
I did two test spots to remove what appears to be surface rust all over the shafts. First, I used an MF towel and Barkeepers' Friend. It removed about 90-95% of the rust. Next, I used Collinite Metal Wax #850 and an MF towel and it appears to remove 99-100% of the rust. There were no pits. It really seems to be no big deal, but I don't have much experience with rust.
Questions:
1. Do you guys see any problem with me using these products to remove rust spots on the shafts?
2. Are the rust spots going to come back, get worse, and eventually ruin the shafts?
3. Once I remove the spots, can I put a wax on them to protect them? I have Collinite 845 and WGDGPS in terms of durability. I'm hoping this will prevent #2 above.
4. Side bar: Can I use #850 on the grooves of the club to clean/shine them up? If there are any golfers out there, do you think this would increase slickness and affect the clubs?
I realize this thread is useless without pics, but once you guys give me the go ahead to do it, I will fully detail them and document it. A test spot on a golf shaft is very hard to take a photo of.
If it was any other thing around the house, I would've dove right in to fixing them. However, these guys have a lot of sentimental value.
