Detailing training day, visit from another forum member.

Hi! This is my first post to AG. I'm just getting my detailing business going. I'd really like to take some paint reconditioning training, but there's nothing I know of close to my area-which is in Southern Indiana. I have no experience with buffing, polishing, swirl removal, or anything like that. I'm just getting by with regular production detail and waxing vehicles. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
I'm excited to see the "After" pictures of this Honda too!

Thanks for all the great information on this forum!

Dave

All I can say is your a better man then me :D

Thanks Dave. This is actually the same forum member but he will be traveling here to get some further experience. Let me take a minute to remind you all to not forget the near 100 hours that Michael13 has spent designing and helping me work on my yet to be hosted website. This is not a 100% selfless thing that is going on here. More of a bartering deal actually.
Yea I forgot he was helping you set up a website, and I see it's up and running. VERY NICE! Michael did a great job! I like it, simple but full of information. Glad to see you're on the web!

The real beauty in Dave's website is in the code.
I did not want Dave to have to learn HTML to be able to work on his website.

What I did, was take one of many versions of OSCommerce and modify it extensively to suit Dave's needs. There is a nice and simple admin area where all on site text and a majority of the graphics can easily be modified without needing to know any HTML code. And the site can easily be modified into a full featured store - shopping cart, shipping calculation, customer accounts, multiple payment methods, etc. - with a few simple configuration option changse, if Dave ever desired to do so.

One of my strong areas is in writing code, and that is where I spent about 80 hours on this site. I also spent quite a few hours making sure that the site appeared uniformly in IE, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, and as many mobile browsers as I have access to. I then used a few search engine optimization techniques, such as making sure that the main text appears in the code prior to the less important - to a search engine - navigation and layout code.

For design, I went for something that was simple and non distracting from the text.

Dave was responsible for all text on the site.

And do not forget that I am legally blind.

Dave has helped me much more than you could imagine over the short few months that I have been in contact with him.
It goes way beyond detailing, he has become a true friend to me.

Thanks a lot! That's still a couple of hours from me, but closer than Florida or Pittsburg! I was anticipating having to pay, and I know it'll pay off. I work two jobs other than detailing, so I'm putting all the money I make from detailing, back into my business, since I'm just starting.

Send Chris a PM and maybe you guys can work together for a couple of days

Oh yea,

If he sticks out his index finger and asks you to pull it, don't do it :nomore:

I am glad that you feel this way about it. I enjoy our chats and you totally inspire me by the way you go for what it is that you set your mind to doing, regardless of any hardships that you may have.:urtheman:

Flash, I love your sense of humor. :coolgleam:

Very nice of you Dave. I learned a lot watching and helping my friend who details for a living. Its nice that you are willing to take time to help another member out.

I was just informed that Michael13 has to go for a surgery on his foot in a few days and unfortunately won't be able to make the trip down on the 24th. His foot is in pretty bad shape and the important thing is that he is getting it taken care of by some really good doctors. I have offered to make time for when he is back in action to schedule another training day for the two of us to work together. It's not hard to find someone who wants a free detail so getting a donor car in the spring will be no problem.

So, any other takers on joining in on trying to bring this old beat up Honda back to life on the 24th? I had scheduled a vacation day from my regular day job to tackle this project as an aid in teaching Michael13 a few things. If there are any other newbies in my area that would like to join in I'll keep the car scheduled for the 24th.

If I can't get anyone to join in on the fun then I may cancel it and polish up my Buick and apply the Opti-Coat 2.0 that I recently bought to go on it.

The owner of this Honda also works at my day job and he would be interested in learning as he helps me detail cars from time to time but "we" can't both have the day off at the same time as that would strain the operations at our plant too much. If anyone is interested just post your interest in this thread or PM me or do both. Thanks, TD

So sorry that Michael is having issues with his foot. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

I am very interested in working the detail with you, Dave. As previously stated, I have a commitment for the day on the 24th. Let me know if you reschedule or if you have another job in the wings. Thanks.

I feel really badly about this turn of events.

When we first scheduled this date, I was aware of - and informed Dave about - the potential for this to happen.

Although I knew that there was a possibility for this to happen, I was really sort of surprised when the doctor gave me the news, as my normal foot doctor was not making my issue seem as bad as it really was. My normal foot doctor was saying "yes, you may have to go for another surgery someday, Just try to take it a little easy, and things should be fine for a while." I told that to my primary care physician and he told me "I would get a second opinion if I were you.", and referred me to a second - much more advanced - foot institute.

I went to see the people at the institute yesterday, and lets just say that as soon as the doctor read the x-rays, I was immediately put into a wheelchair and told do not walk, do not stand, do not put any type of pressure on that foot, we need to operate very soon. I was told that I have screws from my prior surgery that are broken, screws that are backing out, and that the plate from my prior surgery will have to be removed. I then require the bones in my foot to be fused together.

The doctor told me that this will be a series of surgeries, and the total time of recovery is expected to be 1 year or longer.

The news rocked my world.
Along with this meeting with Dave, I just started my detailing business, was prepared to return to college in less than two weeks, and had many other personal plans lined up that will have to be cancelled.

I hope that someone can take advantage of this amazing offer. Dave is one heck of a great guy, and his greatness can only be matched by his knowledge of detailing. Even if you have a long drive -- in my case 3+ hours, learning from Dave is well worth the time and effort.

Thanks for the kind words Michael. I know this probably won't make you feel any better right now but in the totality of things, one year isn't that long. Now that's easy for me to say because I am not the one who has to sit that year out. Keep in touch on the messenger and you have my phone number too. Don't be bashful, you can call any time. Most importantly take care of that foot. Your still young and that foot surgery will surely enhance your life. They say that everything happens for a reason so just bide your time, follow the doctor's orders and I am sure that reason will eventually reveal itself.

I am currently working on a multiple step paint correction on a Black Toyota Solara here at my place. I have the car for 2 weeks if needed and am only half way through the first correction step. I'll be working on it between the hours of 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm on the weeknights this week and will be working on it all day Sunday as well as I have a detail to do on Saturday in Mechanicsburg. You're welcome to stop by if you like and pick up a few polishing pointers. Just PM me and I'll give you directions on how to get here if you should decide to stop by. TD

Thanks Dave. I will be taking you up on that.

Michael-
Hang in there brother. Like Dave says, there must be a reason for things to be happening this way. You can still read, watch, and learn. Use the year wisely. Most especially follow doctors orders and rehab that foot so you will be brand new in a year; maybe even for Spring details. You have a whole bunch of folks here you can lean on so don't think you are on your own. Best of luck with the surgery and rehab. Stay active here on AG.

Well today is the day and I am out there working by myself on this dang black Toyota Solara that is proving to be one of the most challenging paint systems that I have tried to finish to near perfection. I have compounded using the beta Poorboy's World Master Cut, http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...oy-s-world-master-cut-super-cut-compound.html and M-105 where Master Cut wasn't cutting it (deeper defects) and I have rotary polished using M-205 and a finishing pad but there are still a decent amount of holograms present so I have decided to finish polish with Optimum Finish using my G110V2 and a Edge 2000 finishing pad and then apply a coat of Opti-Coat 2.0 to protect this ever so difficult to create finish. This customer didn't want to spring for the extra charge for the Opti-Coat because the bill is already very large but since it will be my first time applying it and the fact that this particular customer treats me so well (gives me plenty of time to do the work and gives me plenty of jobs) I am going to throw it in free of charge to get the practice and because I really don't want to work on this car again for a long while.

The owner/owners of this car are getting married on the 4th of September and have invited me to the wedding which I will attend. I will give them the Opti-Coat as a wedding gift.

Anyway the reason I am posting this is in case if anyone in the area wanted to come on out and observe any part of today's work they are welcome to do so. Kind of a last offer. I'll be on it until dark. If anyone wants to come out just click on my website link below to find my phone number and give me a call and I'll tell you how to get here.

Sounds like fun Dave. I wish I were closer
