Was the dewalt dw849 type 2 manufactured using defective trigger switches which not allows the polisher to vary its speed properly by pressing on it . Does anyone have problems with this?

I had a buddy who used a Dewalt and he constantly had problems with the trigger, and the locking mechanism. So maybe it's not so uncommon?

I just texted a very good friend of mine who until the past year, was a service manager for Black & Decker/Dewalt. This person told me that while it was not an extremely common failure, the triggers in the buffers and grinders did go out from time to time.

is there anyway you can text him and ask why they discontinued the original switch in a type 2 and I think used another type? I was looking online and the parts list for type 2 said the switch is discontinued.

thanks

No problem. I woke em with the last text though. I will call in the morning and post the reply.

I believe DeWalt jumped on the outsourcing bandwagon over the past few years, maybe even before black and decker bought them out. Less quality control.

I always thought that DeWalt made some of the finest tools in the industry. I bought an orbital sander, router, reciprocating saw, and electric drill and have had problems with three out of four tools which is not indicative of what I thought their quality should be.

Keep in mind that I baby my tools, their more like toys but nevertheless I do use them allot but I do not abuse them. I don't know if the Black & Decker buyout influenced their quality and performance but I suspect so.

I made the switch from Dewalt to Makita and have had ZERO issues with this brand and pound for pound the Makita is much more powerful and robust than the DeWalt by far.

Other brand in my stable are: Porter Cable, Hitachi, and now I have a couple of beauties from some manufacture named Flex and the issues with these are also ZERO..

I posted this about a week ago,
The type 2 had a problem with the trigger and it was discontinued , and replaced it with a retro fitted kit from the type 3. This retrofit comes as kit with instructions and new spec. tag showing it has been retrofitted to the type 3, cost is around 35.00. You can get it from any Dewalt repair/service center.
The type 2 buffer has been replaced with the type 3 and the only difference it the trigger. There are sellers on e-bay and amazon that are selling the type 2 cheap, from 150.00 to 175.00 brand new. I bought three of them 2 years ago and had to do the retrofit on all of them within the 1st year. so this is nothing new its been going on for a while now.

I have rocked my DeWalt DW849 HARDCORE for over 10 years now with out a hitch but........... my new love is the FLEX P-14!!

dewalt has a retrofit, it uses the type 3 trigger. It comes with install instructions that will take care for your problem.

Contact your local dewalt repair center and they will get you fixed up. It was around 35.00 bucks

I own 8 DeWalts (some re-branded as mac, snap on and black and decker) they all work and have worked fine. How can I tell the types 1,2, 3??

Joe unless you have bought a brand new one in the last 2-3 years they are all type 1s all of my older ones are type 1, B&D, dewalt, snap-on are type 1. The type 2-3 show it on the spec. tag ( on the side) Type1 has no type on it.
when you open up a type 2 the trigger is way different than the type 1 and if your like me, always have a spare trigger in the tool box, this how I found out the difference when I went to replace one.
