Thanks, it took me 2 years of sanding, taping, priming and doing minor skim coats of Evercoat on fenders and bumpers in the body shop I worked at back in my twenties, before my teacher would let me touch a paint gun. I finally painted my first vehicle in the paint booth and he said my results were simply beginner's luck. I moved on from the auto body industry shortly after that. My teacher , Robert "Red" Kohl just retired this year in his late eighty's and was one of the best in the industry. I'm truly grateful to have been taught just a little of what he knows. All I have to say is teach me. lol
The only paint I removed was in the areas that were cracked and flaked off from the impact on the front end. Then the areas where the paint was removed were feather edged, (a sanding technique so the edge of the old paint isn't seen as a line under the new paint) primed, sanded, filled, sanded, primed, sanded, sealed, sanded, primed, sanded, painted with 2 coats of color and then 2 coats of clear. All rattle cans of color code matched paint from the auto body supply house and the $30 a can clear coat. A lot of Prep-All was used in this repair, before any sanding was started (most important) and pretty much between each step and a tack cloth was used to ensure that any traces of dust were removed before the color coat was applied.Hey I have the same car and same problems what did u do take all paint off and respray it with a can or gun
Thanks Bobby, I try to put "High Quality" into everything that I touch.Holy smokes Dave!!
That's a whole lot more then impressive, it came out absolutely gorgeous!! WOW.... :dblthumb2:
I like the way you stripped and sanded everything down and brought it up from the primer cast....Man that's IMPRESSIVE!!rops:
I get a lot of requests to do body work and paint work but you can only do so much before you start getting into dangerous territory concerning E.P.A. etc. so I just refer a great local family owned body/paint shop.I agree with Bobby. Impressive is a drastic understatement. Being able to do body work as a detailer is a great skill to have. While doing a client's vehicle. If body repairs are needed, it could possibly turn into a quite lucrative upsell.
Thanks. The car is owned by the office manager at the bus and van sales company that I rent my shop from so I get to keep my eyes on it, so far (less a few small stone chips) it still looks just as good as the day I finished it. "Joanne" the owner was floored by the results. She has a "diamond in the rough" with me right outside her office door where car care is concerned and she has me do everything car care related to her cars.Yeah I would go out on a limb and say that is better than new! I would be very happy to have been the owner of that car after you got to it!
Thanks. I definitely put more "love" into this job than what any body shop would have.I am willing to bet that this repair is of higher quality than being done in a body shop. I doubt they would spend this much prep time yielding this fantastic finished product.
Truly an awesome job!!
I wish you were closer too, I love working on the classics.Wow Dave that looks better than new!!!
I wish you were closer. The front and rear of my 79 Z28 could use the same treatment!
Thanks. Not too sure where your location is but the way it sounds, it may be "across the pond".WOW.... so when can I drop off my Cherokee!
No adhesion promoter was used in this repair. I put an incredible amount of of care into using lots of pre-clean and using the right grit paper. Adhesion promoter is nice to have when pumping lots of work out but when you make the time to do things right it's really not a necessity. Some time has passed and the paint hasn't fallen off yet.Looks great Dave!
Question: Did you use adhesion promoter between the plastic and primer? I hear you need to or the paint will fall off. Maybe not needed if you still have some paint on the bumper though?
Thanks man!!That really does look spectacular. That body shop experience in the past really paid off.
