Did my detailer ruin the paint?

Brought the car to a buddy who has a small detailing business and has detailed a few Porsches & other sports cars.

He was able to take care of most of the issues but he made this nasty spot on the hood. I suspect this is what clear looks like when it begins to burn through.

Any insight on what causes this, and whether or not its fixable? He said he thinks he can fix it by sanding it but I'm not comfortable with the idea now.

I appreciate your responses.

To be clear...this was not there when I dropped the car off. The car has been detailed one other time by someone else and came out flawless. There are 37, 000 miles on the car.
 
If your not comfortable with this detailer sanding to fix this
paint blemish (from where I'm sitting: It looks like it may
very well be the CC was compromised to some extent)...

You may need to go to a couple of body/paint shops to get
their up close and personal opinions of the repair needed.

That looks like a repaint is in order. So many hacks out there - 2 details and the paint is ruined. Sorry to hear that.

Sanding will only make things worse. Did he use a rotary buffer? Keep your buddy the hell away from your car!!!!
 
That's definitely clear coat issue.

Doesn't he have a paint thickness meter? No one should be polishing cars without knowing how much clear/paint there is.

My guess is that maybe his arm got tired and when he changed hands he left the rotary or DA sitting in a spot for too long, since it is in the hood.
Your buddy screwed up pretty bad.
 
That looks real weird, the metal flake is still there in the "burn". Did you buy the car new or used? How does it feel when you run your hand across it?

It looks the same to me, like he buffed too hard/too long in one spot and took of way too much paint. I would definitely label this a "paint burn."
 
There still is some metal flake visible throughout the burn. Also, in the shade this spot is almost entirely invisible, but in direct sunlight it jumps right out at you. Paint is smooth to the touch. No paint thickness gauge just yet. I have seen some of his work on his own cars and a Porsche. Everything looked great. I believe he uses a rotary.

There you go, it takes only a split second to burn through the paint with a rotary buffer. I think he burned right though the clear and so far through the base coat that only a whisper of paint with some flake is left. All he would have had to do is make one too many passes over a thin area with too much pressure, buffer speed, too heavy of a compound or any number of other things, That's why rotaries are so much harder to learn and 95 percent + detailers stick with a DA.
 
Do the water test. Run water over the area. Does the imperfection disappear? If no then nothing you can do but repaint. If yes then the clear is still present but probably quite thin. I did this to my car about two years ago. I wouldn't recommend wet sanding as the clear is probably really thin now. What I did was get all wax and sealer off the panel. Then sprayed clear coat over the spot feathering it our on every coat. Put three or four coats. Once cured wet sand the area and buff it out. Will look new or practically new. I posted a thread on mine when it happened in the wet sanding forum
