Discolored dashboard from sun or ??? any way to bring it back?

I am ordered the DP interior cleaner tonight. I will try to get some decent pictures tomorrow to post.

My preference is to try to clean it correctly and see if that helps.

Reproduction parts, including dashboards are readily available.

Why spend $50 on a dye kit and pray for acceptable results.

Hum... where do you get the 50$ price tag from?

A can of leather dye costs 15$ here in Canada. In the states figure half that price, probably around 7-8$.

If dying doesn't do a good job, then by all mean spend the 200$ for a replacement... but why not try fixing it first?

Have you tried any dressing on it after you cleaned it? Maybe some hydration is all that is needed. May be worth trying it little by little.

OK, my DP interior cleaner came in and I have tried it. There is some improvement, but not much. So you think I should rub on some 303 and that should help it? I can try that tomorrow.

Now that it's clean, the 303 should do its magic and make that look better, it may not be 100% but it should be better. Let us know.

I would try PoorBoys trim restore. It will take a few applications. Trim restore works from the inside out.

Put it on thick and rub it in with your hands. Do it as many times as you can stand then wait a day and do it some more. It looks dried out to me and 303 works but it takes a lot when it gets as dry as yours. I've run into these several times. There may be a better product out there to put on once you've got it looking good to seal it but I don't know of anything. I just keep putting 303 on when it looks like it needs more or when I think of it. I purchase it by the gallon. I use Wolfgang Cockpit Trim Sealant as well. It might make a good one two punch after the 303 soaks in.

How many application of 303, would you recommend? I have done at least half dozen over three hours. I can't tell any difference. The more dramatic change was cleaning with the DP interior clean. I will take some more pictures when the sun comes out.

Here are the latest pictures. Is it possible the paint has oxidized and disappeared. There are there distinct patches. If you look close at picture four you can see nearest to the front is the factory finish, the next is a darker gray, and the last one that looks like it might be bare vinyl. I have now cleaned it with DP interior cleaner and put on numerous applications of 303 (at least a dozen coats over eight hours).

Well, AFAIK there is no paint on there. You did say you are the original owner, so you know that the dash hasn't been dyed or anything?

I'm trying to understand where that last picture is and whether the shiny or the dull part is the "factory finish". Has either of those areas changed with the 303 application, and did either of them change from the cleaner?

The dull finish closer to the front is factory. When I was cleaning it I was using a light colored microfiber towel and it just looked like I was getting brown colored dirt off of it. I know the interior grey of a Mustang SVO is different from the other Mustangs of that era.

It looks like the cleaner removed a layer and the 303 made it shinier.

Oh, so the shiny part is not the way it's supposed to look? Maybe that is just old dressing, maybe you need to clean it more. You just need to be really careful, as I'm sure I said earlier, some stuff just deteriorates with age and I'd hate for you to wind up worse than when you started from repeatedly messing with it.

Thank you for your help. I will try the DP interior cleaner again and observe what is happening.

I made a post on the Mustang SVO board to see if they could provide some insight.

I used the DP interior cleaner on the dash again and paid close attention. I definitely think I am removing oxidized paint. So at some point I am going to have to repaint it. Which means I have to track down the odd grey they used.

I will also see what is said on the SVO forum and let you know for future reference.
