Discussion: Do you feel like you are cheating a customer when...

I just recently purchased spray wax for a package. I tell the customers that it is JUNK. Some upgrade some dont.

What is junk? Why would you buy a product that you think is junk, let alone offer it to your customers...

Because I am not a big believer in spray on wax. Just my personal opinion. If I must go into details. We decided to run a groupon. This is the thing with a groupon ( Business Minded ) if you use your noggin on it. Dont put your best package out there dress up a smaller package and leave room for up sell to help recover some of your "Loss". So with that being said we offered a package with "Spray Wax" something I had to go buy just for this package. So far we have doubled our money in up sell as well as secured more business and appointments.

I guess I just don't get the point of even offering a detail that doesn't use quality products, or at least products that you believe in. I'd rather spend the extra couple minutes putting a real sealant on (lets be honest, it's doesn't take that much longer) than slap on some junk spray wax just to save a few pennies. I guess thats just me though...

Ah, bait and switch. Offer cheap junk to get them in and then upsell them.

I am not a full time detailer. Far from it. I do it part time because I find it rewarding. I guess that is why I would not offer anything I would not use on my own vehicles.

At least you are upfront with them telling them it is "junk". Although I find that spray waxes like Optimum are not junk.

I've never used a spray wax, but from what I've gathered, they do have their place. Instead of advertising a product that you're potentially selling a customer on as junk, maybe explain that while it is a good product for "maintenance protection," you wouldn't recommend it if they're looking for several months of protection. Just be up front and explain that the spray wax could last as little as a week (???) or up to ??-weeks, depending on certain factors. But if telling a client that a product you're putting in front of them is junk, and that makes them want to spend even more money with you, then keep doing what works. :xyxthumbs:

Would never just use a spray wax without informing the client of it first. I typically only use a spray wax for maintenance packages, but for a 2-3 times a year detail, I make sure to use a true sealant/wax.

If they are aware of it, then it is definitly not cheating or lying to them. Just be honest with how long you think it will last on the paint.

I do the same. If the customer orders my standard package (which is designed more for a maintenance wash) I will use a spray wax. Or if I know the customer's car already has a good coat of wax or sealant on it I'll use the spray wax. But my customers are always informed of whats going on their car and how long they can expect it to last.

Offer $75 details and close the deal with a $300 detail

I HATE the bait and switch crap! Just my personal opinion. I can see why he is doing it as with the groupon offers you can really get yourself into a hole.

But when it comes to me if I bought a groupon thing and came in and they were basically telling me that what they were going to use is junk and won't last but we can up sell you to this I'd probably walk out.

I personally have very few "up sells" and honestly try to stay away from them unless I really need to. My package prices are set up to cover majority of my customers. Now if I have a extremely neglected interior or car, or overspray etc. that is going to take me extra time that wasn't included in the price I will contact the customer prior to moving forward and find out what they want to do. But I rarely try to upsell my customer on the spot. Most people get aggravated with it (i know i do!). It's just like going to Jiffy Lube to get an oil change...I want a $30 oil change...not the tranny flush, new wipers, etc etc.

I hate upselling. I always feel like a slimeball when I try it. Works for some though :)

Interesting discussion, thanks for participating.

It makes me feel like I'm a used car sales man. There are times where it's needed I understand that but the way some people go about up selling I think is wrong.

But that's my opinion.

My level one detail comes with spray wax... When I did my Groupon it said in it that this is a maintnence detail and if you would like to please feel free to ask about our other packages or ala cart services... I don't try to up sell customers unless I know that they are not going to be happy with the outcome after I have seen the car... I agree that it is kinda a bait n switch tactic but in my case they have been informed...

As far as spray waxes I feel that it is only cheating them if they are not informed... If it is made aware then they aren't being cheated... When it comes to spray waxes I use Optimum and love it for my personal use I have tried Megs UQW and (I know I know) TW Ice spray waxes between details... It is quick and easy and remember your car as a detailer is a rolling biz card!

The most expensive detailer in my area ( and likely the best ) does not offer any cheap jobs. While he will do a wash only, he will let nothing go out of his shop that is not perfect. He does not allow his name to be a attached to a so, so look. If a customer wants a less than great job he sends them some where else.

He uses only what he considers the best products available, so he has no need to second guess himself,

I think maybe there is a misunderstanding. I do not hassle the customer or even try and offer the up sell or pull the bait and switch. I give my HONEST opinion when asked and only than. Other than that we go out preform our services purchased and move on. Every time I have had a customer ask about the "Spray Wax". I tell them my honest opinion. Not only from being honest have I scored a better package but also have booked another appointment with that customer. I tell the customer that I personally am not a firm believer in "spray wax" and we have never offered the service before but only for the groupon as a entry level detail for people to try our company out. But again I only give my honest opinion when asked. Sorry I just do not see spray wax as a protectant compared to a good coat of carnuba or sealant. In my book spray wax and detail should not be used in the same sentence. Maybe for a touch up but not as a full blown LSP sorry.
