DIY LED Work Light (much better than halogen!)

Love mine too but have the same problem of falling angle due to the weight of the bulbs. Went with utilitech 22w 1000lumens from lowes. Much thanks to Zach though for the idea and design!

Check out the boom assembly that Claude mentioned for a better option to view horizontal panels.

I got the 50% reduced power version of this setup ( just 1 of the pricey LEDs ) and it works great. It spots swirls better than the sun, no kidding. I can see some faint hairline swirls here and there on the hood I just buffed but in direct sun and other lights Ive used they are not visible.

This light set up is ABSOLUTELY the best investment I made. I have the floor version and a boom setup and dual LEDs on both and man does it work out great! I will say this however, sometimes it does "blind" you a little and although it does show more than everything else, I still use my halogen setup to do a final inspection. Varying the distance of the LED does help a little but I haven't found it to be an absolute halogen killer. One instance where I will use both LEDs and Halogen at the same time is when I coat. For some reason the halogens tend to show high spots a little better.

As far as the weight is concerned (and the infamous tilt), I will have a quick fix for that in the next couple of weeks. I am planning on going medieval on it. I never have to tilt the smaller stand because I have the boom for the vertical so I will just glue and screw them. Two part epoxy and stainless screws here I come!!

anyone have a link for a good boom stand? love this light idea, just worried about stand being strong and heavy enough.

Since I don't have a garage and always wash and spray diluted Gtechniq C2v3 on the car in the late afternoon, what lights (prefer LED) would you guys recommend?

So you're looking for more of a general work light, not a light for spotting defects?

If so, just get some cheap halogens. They will light up your area.

SOO i got the Lowes 1400 lumen LED 5k, AMAZING!!!!! Look at a normal small LED flashlight compared to the 1400 lumen LED bulb, very impressive, and we all know how hard white can be to find those swirls. This owner said the white was not bad, she just wanted the red stripes done before the seal, than i showed her some shots under the swirl finder lights, she was shocked lol.

Im going to get the boom and the dual holder, this one is mounted on my ceiling. still impressive.

With the new LEDs, it really tests your skills, but here is a awesome example of RAW paint vs STage 1 correction and dull stage corretion. Impressive lights. thanks guys!

Be FOREWARNED!!!! Those LEDs show a LOT of stuff, and may/will drive you insane. You need to learn to walk away at times because a lot of the defects you will see under those LEDs cannot be seen in the light (except maybe for 15 minutes at dusk and dawn). Now feel free to chase every little imperfections if it is a show car but give yourself a break if it is a daily driver!

LOL made me laugh, I was doin this F type tonight with some Gtech EXO, for one, its BLACK for two, EVERY little fine streak was driving me nuts, i got it 95% perfect id say under these 1400 LEDs lol so im sure outside tomorrow it will be fine, but yeaaa i know what u mean lol, these things are insaine!

He just got the coating, did not want a full correction, I warned him, but he said no its brand new paint dont need it..... But it does have some imperfections.
But the exo turned out nice. But these lights drove me nuts lol.

Dont mind those weird line/streaks, they look like streaks, but they are reflection of the LED cooling fins.

Very true about LEDS showing i little to much defects sometimes. So used one of my haulogen lights on the same stand so i can keep my sanity. (love LEDS white light and cooler) Thanks for the LED tips

Awesome set up!! I would be scared to have the "HELL"ogen that close to the plastic housing of the LEDs though

Thanks never thought of the heat. I just put it together might have to do more mod on it. I was hopping to use the halogen just for a quick look not use for long time. (need to keep a close eye on this thanks)
