Hey guys,

Detailing noob here. I have the following problem:

The windscreen of my bike has severe spiderwebs and a light surface scratch. It is made of plastic.

I have the following tools:

PorterCableRotaryBuffer.jpg

  • Poorboy's SSR 1 light abrasive swirl remover
  • Poorboy's SSR 2.5 medium abrasive swirl remover
  • White, Black, and Orange foam Lake Country pads

What would you recommend I do? I was thinking...

  1. 1 high speed pass with SSR 2.5 + Orange pad.
  2. A few medium speed passes with SSR 1 + White pad.
  3. Finish with Wax + Black pad.

Any advice?? I'm worried about hazing the plastic because its clear. I have 0000 steel wool, should I go at it with that first? I have some clay bars too, but the windshield doesn't look contaminated and I don't think they'll do anything.

Umm by the picture you have a rotary? Or do you have the Porter Cable Dual Action polisher?

Be very careful using a rotary on a plastic windscreen. Plastic is very soft and can be damaged by even a modest amount of heat.
Try it at it's lowest speed, with your softest pad, and your mildest polish. Don't even consider using steel wool on any plastic windscreen. That will be the last time you'll be able to see through it.
And even the mildest polish you have is probably too abrasive.
Take a look at Meguiar's plastic polishes
MEGUIARS #17 & #10 Auto Plastic Cleaner & Plastic Polish: Clean and clarify clear plastic automotive surfaces with meguiars plastic care detailing
They are designed for plastic and I have had good luck with them over the years. While working on aircraft windows they are the only thing I trust to not damage the plastic.

One good thing about motorcycle windscreens is they are cheap and fast to replace when damaged.
