Do I need business permit?

I get like... 1 -2 customer per month.

and barely get any paint correction at the moment.

I was thinking wait for permit untill i get more business...

Thoughts?

also what are your tips for getting more people to come at you?
 
There's really no quick format to get customers you have to get out there and hustle and do quality work,customers will eventually come.As far as a permit I'm mobile and it was 50 dollars.So for 50 get it if u can.States vary price could be less or more good luck.

haha if price is that cheap for me too, i might as well get the permit since i already have LLC opened up.

some people told me to just start working and get some money to buy quality detailing tools, but
I'd rather have quality products ready first and start working.
and thankfully I got some money back by detailing, and customers (my friends and co workers lol) are very satisfied

you really don't need it my corp is inactive customers pay cash and check.Having a corp will allow you to take business checks from dealers etc

well I am hoping for the best, but what are the odd of totaling a car or damaging it in a garage while its not moving??

especially when Im doing maybe 2 non exotic cars a month.

also I don't have business license yet, which means nothing i can insure.
I have seen a lot of weekend detailers who works at home, not having insurances even if they have business permit.
 
I'm a weekend hobbyist, but I've done friends cars, like full on paint correction. Honestly, if I was doing this for less than 500 a month, then I would be a strictly cash kind of person so I wouldn't have to deal with the taxes and all. Consider it a "donation" to me for my work.

If a person hires a lawyer cause you marred his paint from going too aggressive, then he's probably nuts. The cost to sue would far exceed the value in his time and efforts.

You really should have insurance for the work you do. $h!t happens and you would be stuck footing the bill. I am hoping since you have no insurance you have a nice chuck of money put away in a savings or money market account; i.e. self insuring?
 
It only takes one customer to put you in a world of financial hurt. Tread carefully.
 
Understood as stupid as it may sound I will take the risk,If I had employees then the scenario would be differentI have a occupational license for the police if someone tries to wiggle out of paying me whichever never occurred .If I'm moving a car Ten feet and something happens my insurance on my van will cover it .

The odds of totaling a car is next to zero, but what happens if you scratch a fender, or burn some paint off, how about lift off pinstripe. Can you afford to repaint someone's car? If I took my car to a detailer, and they did any of that to my car a sorry wouldn't cut it.
 
If,you're doing those mistakes then move on to a different profession.If scratch a fender somehow ,I would eat it not gonna pay 3000 a year on insurance ,I had it thru progressive from 06to 2010 never utilized it .The first thing I do as soon as I get to a job is to look for prior damage then inform customer in writing.Then we discuss detailing prices etc.Never had a promblem,also stay away from engine washing that can come back to bite you a week later,customer will call you and ask why is my check engine light on ,you will say I don't know and that customer is pissed of at you stay away from engines .If he insist get it in writing to protect your self.

Agree with all. Some people just won't ever understand. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink!
 
This is the one thing I'll never under stand ever. People running a business with no insurance. Two things to think about. What happens if all your equipment gets stolen or you damage a customers car? How are you going to replace or fix the damage.
 
The pesky thing about "Accidents" is that you cannot plan ahead for them, other than to have insurance to back you up in case one happens.

OP should read that recent thread about paint peeling off a customers car from a headlight restore. I think he made like $50 or something, and might be getting sued or on the hook for a couple hundred dollar repair to a customers car.

IOW's, Get legal & Get insurance.

First, thank you for your respond.

of course if this is full time business or anything more than weekend detailing doing way more than 1 or 2 cars a month I will get a license and insure it.

I mainly wanted to see if people like me, who does 1-2 cars a month (any work from simple wash to full pain correction) have business permit.
