don't understand why Duragloss 501/105 can be a combo?

plz correct me if I am wrong here, but my understanding:

#501: more cut, great durability(supposed to be 1 yr?), great look
#105: less cut, same durability(claimed to be 1yr?), same look

I am sure both are awesome products. I just don't quite understand why lots of ppl use them as a combo, top 501 with 105.

I can understand 501 should be a great AIO and be applied first. Then why 105? I mean, 105 is still an abrasive AIO. I assume it will still remove certain amount of 501 if not all. So it actually harms the durability of 501? If so why many ppl use 105 as a following procedure instead of using some non-abrasive sealant. I am sure that are few sealants there providing the great look and at least claiming they last like 1 year. Would 501/ other-non-abrasive sealant provides a better choice than the current 501/105?

I use 501 and absolutely love the combo of strong cleaners coupled with nano-abrasives. I personally haven't heard of anyone topping 501 with 105 since, you are right---it would strip the benefits of 501.
 
Quite a few on here top 501 with 105 and then Collinite 845. DG 501 cure time is short, so you can top almost right after. The benefit of topping is a added layer of protection and depth and gloss on some colors. I believe some have contact DG directly and inquired about topping 501 with 105 and were told it was safe and beneficial to do so.

I'm with the OP on this one. The only benefit I could possibly see in using 105 after 501 would be to further refine the gloss of the paint finish through mechanical abrasion (machine application). If the level of protection is the same in both then essentially you wouldn't be losing anything in those regards but you certainly couldn't be adding any additional protection with the use of 105 after 501 unless you're just very lightly applying it over cured 501 and removing it like you would an LSP.
 
I've written a lot on this site about 501. Its main merit IMO is its cleaning ability. You are not using it as a sealant per se, but as a paint cleaner. Don't think you need it? Hahahaha...ya, I thought so too before I used it the first time! Try it, you will love it. You will be disgusted at what the pad looks like after going over your clean paint, LOL. Go over that with 105 for true protection. For the ultimate, top it with Colli 845.
 
Interesting, I've never heard someone say DG 105 contains abrasives, even Jerry at Duragloss hasn't mentioned it. Where did you hear this?
 
I know people who just use 501, since it is an AIO sealant, and get about 6 months of protection. There really isn't any need to follow up with 105 or whatever other sealant, especially if it is an AIO, which will just remove the 501 sealant. Personally, I would use a dedicated polish if you need to clean the paint and have the time.
 
Are you guys saying DG 105 is an all in one or contains abrasives because it has "polish" in the name?
 
105 has strong cleaners that will remove oxidation. I am not sure if abrasives are required for it to be considered an AIO but until recently many of you discovered that 501 has abrasives and I've always known it as an AiO.
If prep work really is 95-98% of the looks as everyone here states, why add several coats of a sealant? The product with one application will last 6 months, which is more than enough for 99% of the people here who seen to do their cars every month.
 
105 has such a minute cleaning ability, it's almost negligible. 671 is the strongest, followed by 501. Trust us and the many who swear by the 501/105 combo and don't over-analyze it.

Reviving an old thread ...

When using the 501/105 combo, do you apply the bonding agent at all? If so, at what stage?

I use 601 polish bonding agent mixed at 1 part PBA to 4 parts 501 Marine Polish or 105 Total Performance Polish. There are a few that resort to doing this on a pad face, but it is recommended by the manufacturer to mix it in a bottle. I prefer to follow the manufacturer's suggestion.

I have removed light to moderate oxidation on gelcoat with 561/501 combo. I thought I was going to have to use a normal compound and polish like 105/205 Megs, I was really surprised by the cleaning and correction ability of the two products. I was able to save some time and work within the customers budget, so it worked out great.


Richy what product are you referring to when you mentioned 671 is the strongest. I don't see 671 on the autogeek site or duragloss's site.

If I recall correctly, you should use the mix within 2 hours because you are accelerating the cross-linking of polymers.

In this case...using one of a certain Brand's AIO over top of another one of their AIOs...Nothing new under the Sun.

Case in point:
I bet I'm not the only one that has used one of
Meguiar's AIOs over top of another Meguiar's AIO.
