Dont wash your car in Garden City, NY.

The cop was pretty cool. It's not his fault the neighbor is an A-hole. He is doing his job and he didn't make the law. He could have likely cited the guy and didn't.

Man that guy is screwed though. They have an ordinance that says "no detailing work" at your house ??? ###? Are you allowed to clean your car windows? Clean the snow off your car? Vacuum your car? Check your oil? Change a brake light?

Basically the problem is the neighbor is a jackass. We have "ways" of dealing with neighbors like that where I come from.

The crazy thing is, your not allowed to wash cars where I live. I'm out there foaming my car and doing every other crazy detailing process regularly. I always clean up after myself. I just have cool neighbors that mind their own business and are worried about their jobs and families - not what I'm doing to my car. Go figure.

This came from my friend after he read the article.
"I used to live in Garden City from 1988 until 2003. You had to see the look on the code enforcement guy's face when I took my 23 foot Parker Pilothouse boat home, took it off the trailer in my driveway and started to paint the bottom. I was okay as long as it was back on the trailer and gone after a couple of hours. Some other regs were no parking in the street overnight, no clothes lines, no basketball hoops visable from the street unless you had a permit and other rules. Jim"

Good Neighbors don't bother the other ones unless they are clearly doing something very illegal and causing issues.. :xyxthumbs:

Jerks call about everything and anything...

Yeah, were I used to live in MD we had ways of dealing with them also..... ;)

Sweet ride, what exactly was the point of even washing that car?
Wow, I didn't think we had people on here that would make a comment like that. Maybe that's all he can afford and he still takes pride in it. Maybe you will only drive a 2 year old or newer Jaguar but not everyone can or will. Pretty crappy judgmental attitude towards them.

Meh. My first car was an old, beat up Mercury Cougar with rust spots in the door. Teenager, in high school, working a part-time seasonal job. Fixed the rust with bondo and spray paint. Definitely kept that car waxed and clean! I loved that car! In fact, I kind of wish I had never sold it and, instead, restored it.

You know there's a lot of people who would say that about our focus'es. Even though they are newer and pretty nice looking- they are relatively inexpensive low-end cars. Heck, I've even gotten the comment that I spend too much time and money on it because "It's just a Focus".

My $0.02 anyway. It's a shame they hadn't taken better care of it in the past though.

I still contest that they don't typically wash their car. They were trying to start a fight. While I agree they did nothing wrong, all the evidence leads up to them INTENDING to stir the pot. They had the camera rolling as the cop stopped his car. Not after he had walked up to them, not after 10 minutes of discussion; before the cop even stopped his car ACROSS the street. The cop parks all the way on the other side of the street, and is barely out of the car when they yell ACROSS the street "Is there a problem officer?". They were expecting him. Whether there was a confrontation with the neighbor before, or what- they were egging SOMEONE on. That doesn't mean the law isn't stupid- it just means there's more to the story.

Kind of like the guys who throw a rifle over their shoulder and walk through the nearest populated area with no open carry laws, while their buddy has a camera, just so they can post a video to YouTube of them arguing with some cop about how they have the legal right to do it. Now- I'm not a strict gun law kind of guy; but very few people have any real want or desire to carry a rifle in a populated suburban area (Out here where I live you see it a lot during deer season as guys don't want to leave their rifles in the truck; but then, we don't mind guns and are used to them- it's not gonna stir anything up, so there won't be anybody following them around with iPhones waiting for the cops t show up. It's also far from a populated suburban area!) Most self-defense people will tell you the best policy is a concealed weapon that nobody knows about until it's 'too late'. Let's say a criminal does decide to rob the restaurant you're dining in, guess who target #1 is! Anyway- these guys have zero desire to actually carry their rifle around, they are doing it just to prove a point, stir the pot, and scare people.

This video felt a lot like those videos. I'm not saying these kids were breaking any laws or doing anything wrong; just like the kid open carrying JUST to stir the pot isn't breaking any laws and ideally, wouldn't be harassed by the police for it (but then, he wouldn't be doing it!). But I am saying, I seriously think they were stirring the pot. They MEANT to have a confrontation with police over this. Seriously, what cop brings a print out of the law?

That was my thought too....

Why was a video camera already running when the Police showed up?

Punks looking to stir the pot..... ;)

Not when.. BEFORE! I mean who sees a police car driving down the road, pulling over across the street, and thinks "Get the camera, the police are coming to enforce an unjust law!". Something happened before the camera was rolling!

Punks, I dunno. Not telling the whole story? That I'm sure of.

Also noticed there was a SECOND police car parked.. And the cop sounded just like Ray Romano. That last part doesn't mean anything other than he sounds like Ray Romano...

Oh I am sure of 2 things...

The whole story isn't being told...

And they are punks..... Trying to stir something up....

People move to Garden City because they like those rules. If its not your cup of tea you should not have moved there.

If you do not think it works, check the price of homes in Garden City.

I had a similar situation once when I was moving from my old house and was burning some trash. I had thrown in some old spray paint cans in the fire and a cop from a neighboring jurisdiction was diving by when a can exploded so he proceeded to tell my friend and i that we would have to put the fire out. He said if we didn't he would call the local fire dept. We told him fisrt of all he wasn't in his jurisdiction and didn't know the burning laws in our town and second if he called the fire dept that we were both members of the fire dept. that would be responding and would call the station and tell them not to bother to respond as everything was under control. We also told him that the local Police Chief lived right across the street from me and we could have him come over and explain the rules in out town. He left and didn't return. So much for him trying to push his weight around.

was the cop correct about the exploding cans?

Many years ago, my then landlord, who was a NYC cop, was hosing the street ( gutter) outside his house when a police car drove by and told him to stop. He yelled that he was "on the job" so it was ok.

They stopped and a sergeant got out of the car and told him the being a cop was all more the reason for not water in the street and that next they catch him doing it he would get a ticket.

I thought good for them. Just I thought the guys burning cans that can explode where not really that smart even they were firefighters

There is a local water usage ordinance and a few other local ordinances that apply to detailing in that region. I have had issues myself and only use waterless washing methods when working there.

Also heard rumors of him doing this often or "running a detailing business" out of his driveway in which case the region is not zoned for that type of operation.

Either way, it's not the cops fault. He probably didn't even know the ordinance. Not many do. I usually only get bothered by local town guys or passer-by-ers that warned me about the ordinance.

Cops in Texas

Most cops (there are jerks everywhere) here in Texas are friendly. If you show them your CHL they usually talk guns with you and seem to forget why they started talking to you. My CHL has gotten me out of 3 speeding tickets so far.

Definitely agree with this.
Relating to the people involved, I'd say they aren't the best of neighbors either. Perhaps those who called the cops are always looking to do so, but perhaps these people give them enough reasons for it. Doesn't seem like either side is innocent..

could be a jealous neighbor tired of seeing them wash their cars all the time. btw, their approach and choice of words almost seems to be bringing on a confrontation/argument...

Lmao yep got my jag, lambo and rolls. All less than a year old.

I think they were most likely going to fix er up based on the context of the convo he was having. Either way I'm entitled to my opinion just like you are to yours.

Amerika land of the free? not so much any more.

What are you talking about, here in Chicago illegals are GIVEN drivers licenses so they'll be able to get insurance, pretty free wheelin' if you ask me. Now, reread this and let that sink in a bit.
