what is the best method of drying a car after rain without causing swirls or fine scratches? do u use a mf without pulling it across the paint?

I have seen where some spray with QD and gently wipe. I dont know of any other good way myself.

Haven't done it personally but I use Opt QD as I'm drying following a ONR wash, so I imagine that particular product should be well-suited.
Dodo Time to Dry might also be a good choice.

based on personal preference, I will not touch my paint unless I'm washing the car.
I am guessing you could use a ONR, or spray and wipe (no dry) type product or even a QD. this(ONR) may be more work than what you were looking for though.

I dry my truck and my girlfriends black mustang after every rain using a California blade and an absorber. Both underwent a 2 stage compounding to rid of swirls and I have seen none since I stared wiping away the rain. Been doing it for months.

I wipe it down with S+W and a DMT or if its clean with S+G and a WW ...... no scratching here

I think this thread's gonna head in this direction anyway so...
...since a QD or waterless wash seems to be the most widely accepted/safe way to deal with rain cleanup: what's the difference between a QD and a waterless wash?

Absolutely and in PB case our S+W does not add anything to the finish like more shine or gloss or slickness.... our QD will (S+G, QD+) They also do have lubricants in them but S+W is designed to be scratch free and swirl free when the car is dirty QD's are more for when the car is clean.

I usually state "S+W will get your car as clean and as shiny as it was before it was dirty and S+G or QD+ will "add" to your finish once its clean"

rain could contain minerals and other contaminents, so I dont dry after rain without rewashing as possible. Suppose you could try to blow it dry with leaf blower.

If their's dirt or dust in the air the rain will bring it down on to everything, including your car. I took this picture after it rained in the Mojave desert where it's dusty and windy most of the time.
A quick detailer or spray detailer is sprayed out of a bottle onto the paint and then spread around and the residue is wiped-off.
A waterless wash is a cleaning solution added to a few gallons of water, this water/cleaning solution mixture is wiped onto the finish panel at a time and then the residue is wiped-off.
The lubrication percentage of the liquids being used would vary between spray detailers and waterless wash solutions between manufactures and in the case of the waterless wash how much concentrate the person using it pours in that trying to state which has more or less would probably not be very accurate.

I know about QDs and use Meg's UQD all the time between ONR washes, but now I'm wondering if I have the definition of waterless vs. rinseless washes straight.
Rinseless wash I thought was something like ONR, wherein you add a small volume of wash concentrate to a predetermined volume of water, and then go to town with your grout sponge or wash mit.
Waterless wash I was under ther impression (because I've not purchased/used this class of auto wash yet) does not require the addition of any water; it's already premixed and ready to spray on from a spray bottle. Similiar to a QD, you spray one - wipe over entire surface area with MF #1 - then wipe once more with MF #2 for the dry & shine.

Correct. A Waterless wash is basically the same idea behind a spray detailer. Both should be high in lubricity to help prevent the possibility of instilling scratches when wiping down the paint.
You use a waterless wash just like you would use a spray detailer. The dirtier your car, the more product you want to use, (use the product wet or heavy), and the more microfiber cloths you want to use and switch to a clean microfiber often.
