What is the best way to safely dry a black car? Using air? Water blade? Microfiber towel?

Safest would be with air, like with a master blaster or leaf blower, etc. I'd avoid the water blade in favor of a high quality drying microfiber as a second choice.

Would an air compressor be best?

Interesting question and I honestly don't know the answer. Typically here you'll see people using something with a wider nozzle like the master blaster or leaf blower - I don't see why a compressor wouldn't work with some sort of a wider nozzle so you're not concentrating the air in such a tiny spot - could work great for wheels, etc - hopefully someone with some experience here will chime in on this one.

I still use a high quality microfiber without issue but want to try the air approach, despite the fact that my neighbors will think I've totally lost it.

Same here! Hahaha

Yes Air drying with the metro vac and blow or and electric leaf blower is best (nothing touching the paint). If not the the pooling or sheeting method to get off the most amount of water from the surface then pat of blot dry the car.
