Dumb CanCoat replace/over CQ Lite question

Currently have CQuartz Lite on my wife’s Navigator. It’s been 15 months on and it’s actually doing pretty well from what I can tell. It’s not on palliative care but judging from how long it ‘should’ last I’m planning to replace it. I bought some CanCoat Evo for it and for a couple of friends’ cars…

so here’s the dumb question: how do I determine if I need to polish it out or just Prep wipe down and reapply?

*parked in climate control garage and driven a few times a week for reference.

First, you could just clean the surface and apply right over the top but then the new coating wouldn’t last as long. Since it seems there is still some old coating left, you should at least give it a light polish to remove the coating, do a prep wipe to remove polishing oils, and then you’ll have a solid base for the new coating.

Decon wash in the form of a 3 pH wash and an iron remover. Panel wipe and coat.

Depends on work you wanna put in. You could decon wash.

I follow the ValuGard ABC. I don’t know if it is as affective as there systems Chemicals which consist of (I believe) a (A)acidic wash followed by an (B) alkaline wash and (C) ph7 wash.

I iron decon 1st then rinse. Tar remover if needed.

I then do the 3 washes with (A) Descale (B) Mckee’s coating prep wash and then (C) reset.

Dry and hit with Eraser or the like.

You should be good to go. The only thing that might hurt it is coating left could degrade faster than new coating but I have not seen or read of a test that shows this so as far as I believe it is speculation.

I can tell you i buffed a panel with high spots on CQUK3 and it removed with Essence and a boss yellow (one step/polish) pad and it removed pretty easy.

If your happy with finish a I don’t think a full detailed polish is needed but a quick buzz.

This would give you best adherence.

I did the wash method only on the car with CQUK3 and topped with CanCoat at 1.5 year mark and worked well. Only problem was I only got to watch it for a couple more months so couldn’t tell you how long it lasted.

After rinseless wash today, the CQ lite definitely seems to still be going strong. Bought some Gyeon Q2 Primer that I may do some touch ups with in front and lower panels if they seem degraded. Gotta decide what to do with the roof on this beast. I never put the Lite in it and sprayed some Griots 3 in 1 on it some months ago with a wash and little other prep.

Been thinking about getting some Gyeon Ceramic Detailer to upkeep the CanCoat after I apply it.

CQ Lite can go as long as the maintenance one puts into it. Its true durability is 18 months which CarPro does not advertise as it approaches the on paper claims of their other coatings (which is conservative for them). Use CanCoat this time on the roof.

It works good but you could use what you already have.

My plan (at this point) is to IRONX followed by Lift foam then wash with Descale and see where i’m at.* Here’s my problem though: I’ve already got the CanCoat Evo.** How long will it last since I haven’t opened it? Then once I open it? I have a couple of yo7ng friends I was also going to use it for but they haven’t been available either.

* assuming I can get a day warm and clear enough.
** had it about a month already iirc.

You have us telling you to top off the existing protection with it. It will last a few months opened.

Thought one of y’all had said to let the Lite carry on but went back and read and was mistaken. I’ll decon when I can and then put the CanCoat over top of it.

Late to the thread, but this proves there are NO such things as dumb questions on AGO......... :)

Follow on: out of lift and descale, which would be better in foam cannon or bucket? Or I could use both in the foam cannon one after the other and then contact wash with reset?

Watch this and this will help you to deep clean the coating. You can accomplish the same thing with the CarPro line of shampoos.

Will be mixing up lift and Descale to foam, in that order. The video seems to show using the acidic soap for the bucket wash but I think I’ll use reset since the coating is still doing pretty well. Hopefully body and weather will cooperate tomorrow.

Here is the outline from that video

Foam with Lift
Rinse
Foam with Descale. Leave the foam
Contact wash with Reset
Rinse
You can add an ironx remover as well after the final rinse.
Dry
Panel Wipe
CanCoat

That echoes what I was planning to do :). (Now)

ETA: have two bottles for my foam cannon and now one has Lift and the other Descale in hopes of using it tomorrow.

Went with the plan today. Didn’t have the balance to get on a ladder to do the roof other than foam it down (with both products). Definitely remember why I hate washing with a hose. May get to the CanCoat today or tomorrow but my blood pressure is through the roof and my energy is gone.
The CQUARTZ lite is still doing ok with a little weakness where you’d expect.

Have you thought about one of those spray and rinse products for the roof? Like McKee’s hydro or Gyeon wet coat.
