Duragloss 151? (Fiberglass Polish & Cleaner)

Back when DG was the flavor-of-the-month, I picked up a bottle of this as part of a selection of products I decided to try.

Today I wanted to spruce up the plastic shroud on my snowblower a little bit before putting it away for the summer, since it was a little scuffed up. I was looking through my shelves and picked up the 151 and read the back of the box, where it says "removes oxidized paint, fine scratches, tree sap, bugs, and tar". So that sounded good, and there was a (50's) Corvette on the box. I have used this product before, on paint.

Did an ONR wash then took a new foam applicator and applied. Came back a bit later and buffed it off with a (nice) old bath towel (using a MF just felt wrong). Anyway, now it looks like a swirled up mess...does anyone know if 151 has abrasives in it that would scratch plastic? Maybe this wasn't the right product choice.

Ok, so I was just looking at my other DG "polishes". I've got 151, 111, 501, and 105. They all say pretty much the same thing, with some small differences:

151: "cleans, shines and protects fiberglass surfaces. It removes oxidized paint, fine scratches, tree sap, bugs and tar." It does say that it's clear coat safe.

501: "formulated to clean, polish and protect fiberglass, metal and painted surfaces. It safely removes oxidation, gas & oil film, tar and road film without harming the finish". Doesn't say it's clearcoat safe but we've all used it on our clearcoats.

105: "formulated to clean, shine, and protect", also says "cleans & polishes in one step" and "clear coat safe".

111: "shines and protects clear coated paints. This non-abrasive formula removes fine scratches, tree sap, bugs and tar without removing the protective clear coat."

I guess in retrospect my shiny molded plastic shroud is probably a lot more sensitive than clearcoat paint, perhaps more like a plastic instrument cluster, and I should have chosen the 105 or 111, or maybe something else entirely. That box of 151 was just calling to me "use me up!"...and I still have 90% of the bottle left (I used it on something when I first got it).

Oh well, snowblower is under the cover until next winter so I'm trying not to think about it...maybe with this global warming it won't snow here anymore and I won't have to look at it again.

Well I found something good to use this product for. When you clean your winter steelies with too harsh a cleaner and it dulls the single-stage paint, this shines them back up.
