Just planning on detailing my Audi SQ5 engine for the first time this spring, & I plan on using the Detailer's Pride Engine Degreasing formula (i.e. it has excellent reviews), followed by 303 Aerospace protectant to make thingspretty. Just curious exactly what I'm supposed to cover up when doing the detail work. Most "How Tos" I've read specify to cover the air intake(s) (obviously), but not quite sure about what else?

- alternator/fan belts -- are these rubber belts safe to get the degreaser on? None of the reviews I've read suggest covering the belts (??)
- alternator -- I assume the alternator should be covered so as not to get water inside...is this the case?

Just wondering about any other areas you recommend covering?

Thanks!

Cheers,

For the most part, just use common knowledge when doing engine detailing.

You are correct -- cover up the intake area, as you do not want any sort of moisture getting in this area.

Also, look for what sort of raw open-type wiring connections may be in the area, and simply use caution around those spots. Depending on the type, this can include the raw alternator itself, battery posts, etc. You can absolutely clean all these areas, but just use caution with the product you use on it and the amount you use.

If you dilute your preferred degreaser as recommended and do not let it dwell for a prolonged period of time, there is no reason that it should do any damage to any wiring, belts, etc. The degreasers are made for this type of job, so it comes down to simply using them with caution in specific areas, and making sure that your final rinse efficiently removes any and all left-over product.

Honestly...I have detailed a lot of engines and if the car is built after 2006ish you should be fine. Engines are all covered in plastic and you have a slim chance of anything happening. As TylerHoffarth said above me, cover exposed wires with plastic shopping bags and electrical tape. Also if the battery is exposed cover that. If you want to be really cautious remove the black (-) terminal cable and there will be no electricity going through the wires. If you want to watch a video Larry at AMMO does a good job....
