Anyone use Red Line Synthetic oil. Just curious if you found or heard it works as well as they say. Kind of expensive at $9.49 a bottle but lasts 12,000 miles and suppose to increase HP by about 1-1 1/2 %.

Howard

Red Line, Royal Purple, and Amsoil are all quality oils. Bobistheoilguy.com is a mecca for oil and filter info. Those guys really know there stuff. Castro Syntech is also a quality synthetic oil.

Havent used red line, but have used royal purple and was very happy with it. i believe very few increased mpg claims, but on a 2005 trailblazer I realized about a 1.5 mpg increase in efficiency.

I will never use RP again in anything I drive. It seems to completely shear down to water in only a few thousand miles, making my valvetrain VERY noisy.

I just used amsoil for the first time and my car is virtually silent from under the hood. I used their "Signature Series" and will continue to use it unless something goes wrong. They have a preferred customer program for $20 a year that will save you tons of money. I got 14 botttles of SSO and it should have cost $140, but being a preferred customer I paid $100. Plus you save on everything they make.

I hear all the hype, but have stuck with Mobil 1 for the past 10 years. I can only attest to NEVER having a failure nor an issue with anything related to engine during that time. I'll stick with it ....

Howard, honestly I would stick with Mobile 1 from a price:performance stand point.

The thing about the extended oil change intervals that are claimed... Im not buying it. If you want to take care of your vehicle, 3 months/ 3,000mi is the rule that should be followed. The way I see it, if your going to use synthetic oil, but then leave it in the engine for 10,000mi +,the oil has broken down and your losing all of the benifits of the synthetic so why bother.

The best place I have found to buy mobile 1 is at walmart, they have the cheapest prices for the gallon jug.

Just my 2 pennies.

- I agree -Royal Purple is very thin right out of the bottle(I use 10w40 not 5/30) I have used regular Valvoline for years. I am really considering trying the AMsoil. I have heard nothing but great things about it and unlike Mobile 1 its a true synthetic. Mobile 1 used to be a true synthetic but isnt anymore. If you change oil/filter every 3months/3,000 miles-conventional oil is just fine.

Thanks to all for the input especially the website.....got another 1,500 miles before I decide what to do.........thanks again.

Use Mobil 1 in the Evo, but a local shop started carrying Eneos, so im gonna be trying that (9 dollars a quart...).

AmsOil is the number 1 oil, especially for hi-po cars
Royal Purple is up there pretty close. Haven't heard too much about folks using the Red Line oil for their motors that much. but it is popular. With all the great oils out there, they still have their niche vehicle parts that they excel at.
Say, one may be better for the transmission than the other brand.
But generally, if you change oils at correct part manufacturers recommendations and stay with the type/grade intended, you'll be in great shape.
I use Mobil 1 myself for the engine, and use other brands of synthetics for every other lubricated part of the vehicle.
b-t-w where is that info on Mobil 1 gasoline engine oil not being a true synthetic anymore???

Whatever oil they throw out at the local fast food joints. Just filter out the crumbs.
JK

I use Castrol GTX. It's what the oil change place puts in for free, so that is what I use. Good to know the owners....

I belong to a car forum for LS1's(a HP gm motor)-thats where I read Mobile 1 isnt a true synthetic like it was when GM reccomended Mobile 1 for there engines. These guy eat, drink, and sleep cars so I didnt question them on it. Many of those guys use Amsoil(true synthetic). Penzoil platinum is one of the only "off the shelf" true synthetic oils.

Correct, Mobil 1 used to be made primarily with a group IV base stock which is mandatory for any product to be called synthetic in any country except the US. In the US Group III base stock which is made from purified Pertoleum is all that is required to be called a Sythetic, which is what most Castrol Syntec oil is made from (German Made Syntec is the exception as it is made from GIV stock).

Group III base stocks are very good oils. Castrol GTX from 20 years ago used to be made with Group III base stock and it was the best performing "regular" oil available, but that changed when Syntec was introduced (same product and GTX used to be but different bottle)

Some True Group IV Sythetic oils are Redline (GIV and GV), Royal Purple, Amsoil, German Syntec and others

Castrol GTX on my daily driver, Castrol Syntec/Mobil 1 (which ever wally world has on sale in a 5 quart jug) on Acura.

IMO, the best value in synthetic these days is Penzoil Platinum synthetic. The proof is in the UOA's (used oil analysis), which can be found on the BITOG forums.

I run Platinum 5w20 in my 2005 Mazda3 2.3L for 7500K miles and my UOA came back with great numbers showing that the oil was still doing the job. I could have gone farther on it but per the Mazda warranty I can only go to 7500K.

I seem to remember this being refuted at a later date. Something to the tune of Mobil 1 offering several different brands of its oil under the one name. (I think they renamed them currently with mileage ratings, and older units to differenciate). I will try to find the update .... but I believe SuperSyn is a grade iv PAO synthetic.

Synthetic Oil Life Study
this is also a great read on a test since 2002. Read the Amsoil pages also .. what it clearly shows is one or two oil analysis tests are not sufficent measures. You must start, test and continue to test for a measurable time to see the effects on a widespread basis especially with engine wear and metal ware.

Thats a negative these claims are in fact true (extended intervals). The 3m/3g's mi was true back in the day, but like most things technology catches up and improves life. These oils can in fact last 5,000+ easy without breaking a sweat. I run a synthetic blend (Motorcraft 10w30) and run it for 5,000, city and highway and plenty of spirited driving. The difference is I have proof it's working fine and holding up just fine (hell as you can see they want me to go 6,000 miles and check).

There are plenty of other UOA showing motors going 8,000+ miles and the oils still not broken down and providing plenty of protection.

Mobil 1 for me. It is a true synthectic, They been in it longer than any
other company. Never had any issues yet. Good stuff IMO.

I use Mobil 1 but Amsoil has been making synthetic oils the longest.

I have been using Castrol for many years now and I have no complaints but I think if you change your oil regularly (5k) there is not much practical difference. I had bad experiences with Quaker State and Pennzoil many years back so I am brand specific but I suspect times have changed.
