F-150 Paint Correction Help!

Hello All,

I am new to this forum and am pleased to be a part of it. I know some of the information included in this post is more appropriate for the introduction forum but I wanted to make sure everyone giving input has the background information necessary to inform their decisions. So here we go...

I own a 2007 F-150 Lariat with the two tone paint option. The trucks color is Dark Blue Pearl Metallic and Arizona Beige. The truck is in AMAZING condition with the exception of the paint defects, swirls, and scratches that have been instilled by the previous owners frequent use of automatic car washes. I have tried several attempts at removing the defects with both rotary and DA polishers. I have managed to give the paint additional luster and depth but have failed to remove the defects. I have concluded that the paint on this truck is relatively hard therefore making the defect removal attempts more involved. What products, pads, machine, techniques do you all think would deliver the best results for this situation.

I am a weekend detailer and do my own washing detailing with the correct methods, two bucket, grit guards, etc. I am also frequent with the use of both rotary and DA polishers because refinish antique tractors and other lawn equipment as a hobby. I spay a lot of enamel and some laquer and have no problem using the rotary on these applications due to the nature of the finish. I am reluctant to put the rotary on my trucks clear coat finish. I would like to stick with the DA on this if possible.

You mentioned the tools you tried before, but not the products.

What polishing pads and combos have you used?

On a side note, do some site ups on your equipment refinishing. Sounds pretty interesting.
 
Welcome caudleej and good intro post. I have found, as you suggested, Ford paint to also be on the hard side. You sound like you can assess paint conditions well given your experience but we are most likely curious what you have at your disposal with regard to specific machines, pad inventory and compound/polish products. That info helps us gauge what you have to try and work with.

Another important factor is paint thickness and a 2007 may not have what it left the factory with.

Just a little more info will help us here but a hearty welcome to the greatest exchange of detailing info on the planet!

Thanks for the reply guys. I should have given more information in the original post. I tend to like Meguiar's products because they are relatively cost effective and perform well for what you pay for. I currently have a DA and Rotary that I purchased from Harbor Freight years ago and have been using on my hobby projects with great results. I may go ahead and purchase a Porter Cable or Meguiar's DA polisher for this adventure. I have Buff and Shine Pads in all three categories (Cutting, Polishing, and Finishing/Waxing). Traditionally on my tractors and such I have used the rotary with 3M compound and wool pad and then Meguiar's Fine Cut Cleaner with a foam polishing pad with good results. I have recently started using Meguiar's M105 and M205 with both the rotary and DA with astounding results. I have yet to put the M105 and 205 on the truck but I am thinking of doing a test spot on the bed side with the DA and white buff and shine cutting pad with M105 and then the black buff and shine pad with M205 followed by a couple of coats of the 2.0 sealant. How do you think this sounds?

Do yourself a favor and just get D300 and a micro cut pad, follow with m205 and you should be fine. Much easier to use than 105 and you will get the same results. Good luck!
 
Thanks Mike! I was actually just looking at the Microfiber DA Pads from Meg's on Amazon. I think I am going to order some and an Xtra Cut pad just to keep around in case it's needed. I think I will try the Microfiber correction system seems to be most effective with the DA and more stubborn jobs.
 
What color pads from buff and shine do you have available?

What size d/a pads are you running?

How are you preparing the pad (priming)?

What speed?

How much pressure?

Are you cleaning the pad?
 
Do yourself a favor and just get D300 and a micro cut pad, follow with m205 and you should be fine. Much easier to use than 105 and you will get the same results. Good luck!

Meguiars DA Microfiber Correction System 5 Inch Starter Kit, paint correction kit, dual action polishing kit

The 5" Meguair's "system" is a fantastic way to get into what their microfiber pads (both cutting and finishing) are capable of. You'll get 2 of each, a bottle of D300 as well as D301 finishing polish/wax (both in the Meguiar's clog free squeeze bottle) as well as a backing plate, (that is engineered to work with the Velcro/hook & loop on the pads themselves). Plus... they throw in a fancy dancy Meguiar's detailing apron! :props:

I literally stopped using 105 when 101 came out, but when D300 came out I found myself using more of it than either 101 or 105 combined. ;)

Of course now they have introduced a new polish in that lineup, D302 which is actually BETWEEN D300 and D301. It has less cut than D301, and isn't a "finishing wax". I have some (had to try it), but just reach for 205 or Ultimate Polish if I'm finishing with Meguiar's.:D

The reason I ask is because I typically order from Amazon and the M101 is only available in one size at about $50. The M100 is available in the same size for only about $20. I had read somewhere that the M100 was Europe's version of the M101 or something? Am I correct?

I agree with this as well. My next recommendation would be M100 and the thin Meguiar's burgundy foam pad followed by M205 on the thin yellow Meguiar's polishing pad. Both would be great combos with the HF DA you have.

I used to use M105 a lot, but these days I prefer Ultimate Compound, or M100. I had M101 and never even opened it. I liked M100's performance that much.
