I finished my first exterior detail on my truck by doing the following today:

Optimum No Rinse Wash
Mothers Clay Bar - The clay bar stuck to my hands a fair amount. I looked at it as a good thing because I didn't drop it.
Meguiars Ultimate Compound w/Orange Pad (Lake Country Smart Pad).
Meguiars SwirlX w/White Pad
Duragloss 105

Edit: BTW, I used Zep Citrus (4:1 ratio) for the wheel wells worked great. My wifes already used it in the house to.

I started out w/SwirlX & White Pad a progressed up to the above. I used the Griots ROP for the swirl removal. Still some scratches here and there but quite a bit better than when I started.

Pics below but I'm not much of photographer.

The sheet on the truck, pic below, saved me some trouble, I lifted up the polisher when I finished the first section while the polisher was still running.

Thanks....

Looks really good. I need some of that Zep citrus stuff.

Impressive first detail. That is alot of surface area to cover for your first time. Looks like you did a great job.

Hey guys, thanks!

This was a bigger job than I originally anticipated. I started out thinking I was going to do an AIO (XMT 360) but changed my mind. I saw Mike P. reference a SMAT polish (can't remember which one) as "Bubba Proof" and I thought yep thats what I need. Also, when I first posted I was certain I didn't want to use an orange pad and several people here pointed out not getting some orange pads was a mistake. I'm glad I took their advice and got the orange pads because I needed them.

As far as working w/the Ultimate Compound & SwirlX they seemed okay as far as working in the polish.I think I'll just stick w/those for my truck but hopefully I won't have to do this again for awhile. I'm going to do my best not to introduce more swirls. I loved the Duragloss 105 from ease of use standpoint pretty easy on an off.

Anyway, once again, thanks. There's a lot of good info here.

Matt great first detail, and way to take the time to tape the stuff off, mistakes happen and this will help if it ever happens :)

Thanks, taping it off wasn't too bad, I could see the temptation of not doing it if I did this kind of thing a lot.

My wife's Tahoe is next and I actually think it might be easier. The lines on the Tahoe are smoother & that's what slowed me down. Although, I have no idea what GM paint is like compared to Ford paint re: hard or soft. The Tahoe is silver so hopefully that'll be a little easier too.

@ MDetail, Thanks!
