Thanks for all your hard work guys, you really did a great job!

There are still a lot of swirls, deeper scratches and even cracks and water stains in the paint but it's so much better than the way it was before we started....

Now it's time to clean up the studio for the next project! :dblthumb2:

Comments and questions are welcome....

:)

It was just the workout I needed after putting in 8 hours at the shop!!
This car beat the crap out of us!!

Mike, thanks for the opportunity to work on this car. This paint was the worst I've seen since coming to the Makeovers. The paint was super hard. I know that some sections of the hood were done with at least 5 rounds using the rotary and wool pads and there were still swirls and scratches in the paint. It definitely looks much better than when we started. I think that's the best it will look without wet sanding.

A W E S O M E!!, not only a lot of improvement, but it's the BEST way this paint can look, without a doubt.

The 'cat's meow' about switching M205 for 82 gave a lot of insight on how to proceed after some heavy cutting on 'finicky paint'. Thanks for that.

The Pizza picture as always is one of my favorites... !

Incredible work, I'm really glad for you guys on what you done, tremendous JOB!

Congratulations to everyone,

Kind Regards.

Amazing transformation as usual.

I'm curious as to what is the backstory on this car that it ended up in this condition?

WOW!!! Looks like you put the guys to work on this one Mike!!!!! Looking forward to the after shots!!

There posted....

I aggree Frank... the next step for this car is drive it like it is and maintain what's left or repaint.

An experienced detailer is liquid... ready to move or change to go with the flow...

Just a barn find that took a few years for the owner to get to with the help of his buddy Carlos and the team here at AGO...

Wow!!!! That's some :buffing: right there. Nice work Mike and the gang.

That project reminds me of my http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...5079-trashed-trailblazer-2-work-progress.html . One major difference though, that Olds had single stage paint and my Trailblazer is clear coat. Nice save, Mike. :dblthumb2: I think your project was far worse than mine. Would have loved to had an opportunity to work on that Olds with you and the gang.

One question though...maybe two. Ha ha

You usually involve Meguiars #7 Show Car Glaze is a final step auto glaze to enhanced the gloss prior to wax application. Get a show car shine with Meguiars #7 Show Car in your single stage paint projects. Is there any particular reason that Meg's #7 wasn't included at some point in this project? You sort of fooled me on this one because I was expecting #7 to be used at some point in the process, usually the first step after washing, inspecting, and claying. Right?

Was M105 a consideration versus M100? Can you explain some of the differences in the two that made you settle on using M100? I've yet to try M100 or M101 yet.

Excellent work Mike, and to the entire detail crew! what a difference some hard work will do. :dblthumb2:

Very very nice turn around there team! :xyxthumbs: Great work - that tasty looking pizza was well & truly deserved!!!
A 42, is that a rare year for all American cars, because of WW2? Sure is a handsome beast. Was the paint original or had it been resprayed at any time?
I too have had M205 play silly on a few jobs which screws with your head a little because its such a fun polish to use & 98% of the time it provides awesome results. Changing to a different polish sometimes feels weird but is often the way to go.

Again - top work team! Well done! :dblthumb2:

Again, I'm speechless!

Outstanding, just simply outstanding.

As Aaryn asked...Repaint?

Just to document... we did the #7 rub down here,

1998 Isuzu Rodeo Extreme Makeover! - Single Stage Paint

And here, and to my knowledge this #7 Rub down of the 1967 Continental is the first time the topic of how to restore antique paint using a real antique car has ever been taught in a formal detailing class.

Rupes Bigfoot Polishers Detailing Class & Extreme Paint Restoration

So there is a time and a place for doing the #7 rub down, this wasn't it however.

You ask a great question Bill and the reason we didn't do the #7 rub down first is because it would have been for nothing since we were going to be "chopping" hard on this paint using one of the most aggressive quality compounds on the market with the most aggressive application process that is a rotary buffer with a wool pad.

The compounding process would have simply removed any paint penetrated by the oils in the #7

This was a "last chance to dance" type of buff-out.

Good question.

I'm typing from my lap top at home and not at work with my "arm holder uppers" so I don't type well or fast on a lap top keyboard so my answers will be short.

First, we have a video here on this forum with a Round Table Discussion" between myself, Mike Pennington, Jason Rose and Steve Coronado that discusses the differences. If you watch the video you'll here my comments about M100

Meguiar's M105, M101 and M100 Compounds Round Table Discussion at Autogeek with Mike Phillips

Suffice to say... we chose to make this a "Meguiar's" project, thus using all Meguiar's products. Out of the options, M100 Pro Speed Compound is specifically made for WOOL PADS on ROTARY BUFFERS and I like it's play time, cutting ability and its ability to finish out like a polish and it worked great for "chopping" on this neglected old paint.

A 42, is that a rare year for all American cars, because of WW2?

Correct.

There were very few cars built after 1941 due to America being engaged in World War II. You will rarely see an American car from 1942 to 1945.

There are very few cars and trucks build in 1946, I see mostly Chevy trucks from 1946 and these are very rare too.

By 1947 American car manufacturers were back up and running but even cars built in 1947 are pretty rare. I pointed this out in this thread because one of my Detailing Boot Camp Classes was able to buff out a 1947 Ford.

Pretty cool huh?

Sure is a handsome beast. Was the paint original or had it been resprayed at any time?

I think I mentioned this somewhere on the forum, maybe the "Sign-Up Thread" but this car was repainted sometime in the 1980's so the paint job is likely a single stage enamel, it buffed like enamel.

I too have had M205 play silly on a few jobs which screws with your head a little because its such a fun polish to use & 98% of the time it provides awesome results.

I agree. This is why it's so important to do a Test Spot for every car you work on and do the testing all the way through the last machine polishing step at a minimum.

Good point Aaryn....

:)

Perfection definitely wasn't reality on this one but the improvement was DRAMATIC! Great work to all of you!

Thanks for a very special night with the team, Mike. The "Olds" Lady is a year younger than I am, and with some loving care from the right guys, she looked damned good when she went home with Ralph. Every car has a story and last night was her time to shine. We all left the Lady tired and happy. Life is great! See you next time, Lord willing.

These threads are just fun to read through. I'm certain everyone slept well that night. Imagine doing that one by yourself non-stop. Having a team is the way to go. Thanks for sharing and great work!!!
