LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Florida A stingray jumped into the boat of an 81-year-old Florida man and stabbed him in the chest, leaving its long barb stuck in him, authorities said.
James Bertakis was in critical condition Thursday morning. The man was boating with his grown granddaughter and her friend Wednesday afternoon when the rare attack occurred. The women were able to steer the boat back to Bertakis' home in Lighthouse Point where they called authorities.
"It was a freak accident," said Lighthouse Point acting fire Chief David Donzella. "It's very odd that the thing jumped out of the water and stung him. We still can't believe it."
Bertakis was conscious when paramedics arrived. Surgeons were able to remove some of the barb, but were not able to locate the rest and feared it may have migrated. Bertakis suffered a closed chest wound, collapsed lung and may have to undergo open-heart surgery, rescue officials said.
The roughly 5-foot (1.5-meter) wide, 30 pound (13 kilogram) stingray died on the boat, firefighters said. They kept it in a plastic bag and on ice until Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officers picked it up, Sullivan said.
Ellen Pikitch, a professor of marine biology and fisheries at the University of Miami, who has been studying stingrays for decades, said the fish are generally docile creatures.
"Something like this is really, really extraordinarily rare," she said. "I've never heard any reports of a stingray attacking a person. Even when they are under duress, they don't usually attack."
"Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, 44, died Sept. 4 when a stingray's barb pierced his chest while he was filming a TV show on the Great Barrier Reef.

That is just crazy! A stingray just jumped in a boat??

My uncle lives on the intracoastal in Lighthouse Point, I'll have to ask him. But 5ft wide, holy sh!t, I've never seen a Stingray that large!!

It's so bizarre. They say that being stung by a sting ray is so rare and yet we've had 2 cases in one month now?? How strange!! And this one was on the attack!! Somebody must have pissed these things off and they want revenge!!

So, just heard that the barb was lodged in the guys heart and was removed surgically. OMG, do Stringrays aim for the heart or what?

I think that Bush is to blame :o

Have you really heard that this creature was on the attack? I've been watching the news but they've never come out and said that.

No, of course it wasn't really on the attack. It was just a freak accident. Rays are very gentle. Just the idea of a pissed off ray out for revenge struck me funny that's all. It would be as ridiculous as a manatee on a vendetta, it just would never happen. Although I have heard of the manatees in the Miami Seaquarium packing 357 magnums for the tourists. :p

i see manatees all the time in my river, used to swim with them a lot....they like to be petted

but anyways it just came on tv and the heading was "stingray attack" but its just such a weird freakish thing

its like that simpsons episode where the dolphins are taking over, but instead its ting rays!

They must be tired of getting stepped on! :p I feel sorry for the old man though! That's gotta hurt like a dickens!

I wonder if something in the water of a bad natural desastor is going to happen. Animals have senses that tell them something terrible is going to happen weather wise. Maybe a earth quake is going to occur and the animals are going nuts.
