I know this "first timer" question has been beat to death, but it seems that every case is a little different. I'm basically trying to figure out the best pad/polish combination to go with before I place my PC and pad order.

The "victim" is a new to me, 1986 Nissan 300ZX. The car has been garaged its entire life, but has been subjected to traditional car washes on other crimes that have introduced some pretty typical swirls and scratches. I understand the concept of using the least aggressive products first, but I need a little help in what pad/polish combo I should start with and what combo would be the next step if I need to get more aggressive. One particular area of concern is the rear spoiler, which is cloudy from oxidized paint. Obviously, I'll need to be more aggressive in that area.

Anyone care to offer an opinion on whether this paint is considered hard or soft? I'm also assuming that a 1986 Nissan has BC/CC paint vice single stage, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the help!

Hard to say what will work w/o seeing the car. Since you say the rear spoiler is already oxidized, it might be best to take this to a pro in your area. Your gonna end up spending at least $250 for products, pads and a polisher, so why not have a pro do the buff out or at least look at it? If he doesn't want to touch it or won't guarantee results, then you at least know how bad it is.
