Flex PE14-2-150 Shocking

Once you master the rotary beast, you will reach for it more often. It cuts down on time & effort needed for same results with any other machine. The low speed kicks ass and you have the rest of the upper rpm range if you need it.

8.5" pads are for full size rotaries (Makita/Dwalt) or the old Flex. You should not use larger then 6" pads on the PE14.

I see, but then why this kit offers a 7" backing plate with 8.5" pads?
FLEX PE14-2-150 Rotary Polisher Starter Kit, FLEX circular polisher, buffer kit

Wouldn't that be an issue?

Also, this:
FLEX PE14-2-150 Rotary Polisher, FLEX circular polisher, rotary buffer, circular buffer, FLEX PE14

The links says: "Flex Foam HD Rotary Backing Plate", I'm not sure if is it a normal backing plate or a different one, like this:
6 Inch Rotary Backing Plate Use this backing plate with the Lake Country 7.5 inch pads. The 6 inch backing plate fits perfectly into this recess so

If anyone can help me out with this, I would appreciate it a lot. I'm about to pull the trigger on this rotary but I want to get a good configuration of pads/backing plate.

Running an 8.5" pad on the PE14 will make it run hot and hot is not good for any buffer, IMO.

RSurfer is right, when I use 6.5" pads the polisher runs much hotter than 5.5"-6" pads, can only imagine 8.5".

So is better a 5" backing plate than a 6"?

I use a 5" bp with 5.5" pads or 5.9"(150mm) bp with 6" or 6.5" pads.

6.5" has more cut but machine runs hot as mentioned. Start off with a 5" bp and 5.5" pads and take it from there.

If you want the best, get a 5" 3M backing plate and use 5.5" or 6" pads. Backing plate is pricey..haven't bought one in a while, but the last time I bought one (3+yrs. ago) it was about 60 bucks US.
BTW just used it the other day and was good as new, whereas some of my other backing plates have started to crumble. The yellow urethane bp doesn't seem to hold up.

Just wondering, how easy woukd it be to burn paint on speed setting 1 with a rotary?
