In a recall with few precedents, Ford warned today that 89,193 owners of brand new 2013 Ford Escape SUVs and Ford Fusions with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines should park their vehicles until further notice due to risk of engine fires -- and gave no estimate of when it would have a repair.

The move marks the third recall for burning 1.6-liter turbocharged engines in the new Escape, a cornerstone of Ford's plans to lure buyers with smaller, more efficient vehicles. The previous two recalls earlier this year had been triggered by a lose coolant cap that could spew engine coolant and a weak gas line. Ford also told owners in the gas line recall to stop driving, but vowed to fix that within two weeks.

Ford says no injuries have been linked to the new problem, which it didn't immediately identify. It says owners in the United States and Canada of any 2013 Escape or Fusion with the 1.6-liter engine should call their dealer immediately, and the dealer would arrange for loaner vehicles until the problem can be repaired. The issue doesn't affect owners of Fusion and Escapes with other engines.

One hint of the problems come from an October complaint to federal auto safety officials from a 2013 Ford Escape owner, who said a few days having the two previous engine fire recalls completed, their Escape broke down on the freeway and burned.

"There was a 'pop' sound in the engine area. Instantly, the accelerator had no response, the high engine temperature warning light came on, and then all warning lights, gauges, & tachometer all went dead. Luckily, we were adjacent to an exit ramp, and we coasted to a stop...Immediately, white steam came out of the engine compartment. Knowing the third recall dealt with the "risk of engine fires", we got out, and moved well away from the vehicle. Within minutes, brown, oily smoke came out from under the hood. Then flames came out from under the hood, at the windshield and out the sides of the engine compartment. Then the car burst into flames and was destroyed.

The owner added: "We feel we are lucky to be alive!"

Other automakers have ordered owners to stop driving vehicles due to safety recalls in the past, but have been able to say how long repairs might take.

After winning a reputation for better quality vehicles than its Detroit competition, quality issues have been rising on several new Ford models. The automaker has said it was missing its own targets for quality this year, and cited the high pace of new models as one reason. Given how strongly Ford has staked its future on its EcoBoost turbo engine line -- with millions of copies sold and now featured in Ford models from the Fiesta to the F-Series -- the costs from any lingering worry of engine fires could rise rapidly.

Ford says U.S. owners with questions can call 866-436-7332 and Canadian customers can call 888-222-7814.

Wow! I guess having a fire extinguisher mounted in your turbo charged car isn't just for boy racers anymore.

Seriously though it is good to see that Ford is owning up to the problem. hopefully it is resolved soon.

Was thinking of buying a Ford for the wife. Thank you Subaru for the 2014 Forester refresh. Look forward to meeting you in the spring.

I heard they were considering changing the name of Ford (Found On Road Dead) to Forb (Found On Road Burnt).

Yes Ford has had major problems with the escape. They are trying to fix the problem. Im sure many were mad when they bought a bmw and it got recalled

Big Al has something against Ford. He doesn't ever post recalls for other manufacturers. Never mentions Kia's, Toyota's, ...

:iagree:

Every thread of his about Ford is negative and then his one about Toyota was positive.

Stuff happens, we deal with it and move on. Often in a lot of recalls, the issue was for something out of the manufacturers hands.

At least Ford owns up to the majority of their problems.

not neccesarily, i like the exterior styling on some of the newer fords (edge, escape, and a few others)...

I am not big Al. However, you are really not trying to compare a Ford to a Toyota. It Ford took Ford 20 years to get with 100 miles of Toyota. If it were not for Toyota,Ford would still be selling us peices of Junk.

If you do not beleive me read Consumers Reports.

If you can read my note correctly it is stating that he does not mention recalls from foreign manufactures such as Toyota. Are you going to try and claim that Toyota doesn't have issues? You may be correct if you are only talking about the number of voluntary recalls because they will fight NHTSA to the bitter end. Just like the recent one. I guess keeping your engineering documents overseas has some advantages.

If their products are so superior why does Japan have a closed market and subsidize their products? Same for Korea.

So what do you have against these foreign manufactures such as Toyota or Honda that are building factories in the United States? I mean to my dismay, if I order an Acura TL from the factory, it comes from Marysville, Ohio. Fusions I believe are still built in Mexico. Escape may still be United States?

Won't take credit for it, but read this on another site:
"It's called an Escape because that's what you have to do when it catches fire"

How old are you? Did you own a Ford or other American made car in the 40, 50 or 6o? I am not saying that the Japanese manufacturer are really great people and its true the governments help them, but the fact remain the if it was not for them Ford would still be selling junk, so would the other american manufacturers.

If you read the ratings in Consumer you would see that even though American cars have gotten better ( after 40 years of making junk that nearly drove them out business ) foreign cars are still better, from both a driving and reliably standpoint.
Believe me, as an American, I wish it was not true, but you just cannot hide from the truth.

They're still foreign manufactures. Yes, they may provide jobs for Americans but that's really all they do. Toyota Motor North America may be be based in the USA, but they are a wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota. Just because they may be built here doesn't mean anything in my mind.

The Fusion is now being made in Flat Rock along side the Mustang and the Escape is now over in Louisville, previously in Kansas City.

If you read my note directly it doesn't state any remarks that you infer in your post. I only ask for an even playing field, are you against that?

There are plenty of jokes about Toyota's sudden acceleration but I am not posting them here. I will try and stay above that (admittedly it is difficult at times :).

I have my opinions about other vehicles but I do not attack them. Now if my brand is attacked I will defend it.

In my opinion, even though an Asian brand builds their vehicles here only a small portion of the income stays here (through wages and some taxes). Profits go out of the country - please explain how having more money leave the country than coming in is a good thing?

I have my opinions about Consumer Reports that I am sure you will not agree with.

From a reliability stand point I'll take a Japanese car 9 times out of 10. Are they perfect.....no where near it. All cars should be bullet proof for the prices being paid and the technology available. That being said domestic cars arnt up to my standards yet. Owning a Japanese car for 3 Yeats now I feel I will never buy domestic again. I have not been to the mechanic once. I can't speak for my friends who seem to be in and out of there domestic dealers, but I can speak for my parents. (2009 Chevy uplander, 2012 ford escape) who have been back to the dealers on a monthly basis . Both swear also to never buy domestic again. My father has always told keep your money in the country when you make major purchases but he will soon be following me into the Japanese market. Just because ford owns up to there many problems doesn't make them a good manufacturer. It's still all my personal time going back and forth to the dealer. And my money constantly paying for the insurance of the loaner vehicles. I don't feel that I have to be the genie pig for 30 years worth of me buying vehicles so they can improve. Japan already had that for me.

Sorry for the grammar and mistakes.....coming from my phone.

Note......I feel strongly about some of ford and Chevy gems like the stang and z06.....my father has a 09 z06. If only ever domestic had the rep like the corvette

It may not mean anything in your mind but rest assured it means something to the thousands of Americans whom work there, not to mention the communities where they live and all the business surrounding them, so let's be honest here, ok. I always here the same, tired comments too..."but where do the profits go?", lame and weak! Back 7 yrs ago I owned a Crossfire, built in the Germany at the Karman plant with 85% M-B parts, so what did I buy then?

All MFG's have recalls, Ferrari 458's were HOTT cars when they came out too.....remember?!

I'm sure FoMoCo is going to take care of the problems and continue to builld the freshest and nicest line up on the market today!
