I put some C1 in a cap, let it cure and then crushed it up to get it out:

Wow, that's pretty wild. Are these permanent coatings our semi-permanent?

Thanks for the post Mike! that's a great shot of the crystals in the towel.

Now this is a topic that has started some heated discussions before.
So, the following is my take & opinion **from what I have read and know**

Permanence
There is only one manufacturer that claims that their coating is "permanent." This manufacturer claims that their coating is like paint itself in that it is permanent. Other coatings, they say, are not really coatings but actually "nano-sealants."

However, I believe that nothing is permanent, not even paint itself. And that over time the surface will be instilled with swirls and imperfections. (However light they may be) Even if those imperfections are in the coating and not the paint itself.

Impermanence
22ple, Cquartz, Gtechniq C1/4/5 are what this other manufacturer refers to as "nano-sealants." I would disagree. While all of these coating's hydrophobic, & dirt repellent properties wear away after about two years there is still a "permanent" layer chemically bonded with the paint. These manufacturers understand that after about two years the car will inevitably need a light polish (to remove the coating and imperfections) and then reapply the same coating or a new or improved coating. (C1+EXO... or even some new stuff coming out soon??)

What I found interesting and talked about in the video is how the shiny the crystals are and how the C1 imparts this same type of look to your car's paint. I pointed this out because it is in fact interesting as most other products you put on your paint after they dry don't look like actual crystals or glass.

On the topic of the "word" permanent, I discussed this with Dr. G and then then wrote this article to try to help explain what is meant by the word permanent as it applies to coatings.

3-Categories: Waxes, Paint Sealants and Coatings

In an effort to help standardize terms used in the detailing industry, now that CQuartz and Opti-Coat 2.0 are mainstream, there are three general categories in the "Protection" category

  • Waxes
  • Paint Sealants
  • Coatings

Waxes
Generally defined as any product that contains a natural or synthetic waxy ingredients that are intended to protect the paint and/or add beauty to the paint. These types traditional waxes will wear off under normal wear-n-tear, repeated washings and exposure to the environment.

Paint Sealants
Generally defined as any protection product that contains man-made or synthetic ingredients that are intended to protect the paint and/or add beauty to the paint. These traditional sealants will wear off under normal wear-n-tear, repeated washings and exposure to the environment.

Coatings
Generally defined as any paint protection product that contains man-made or synthetic protection ingredients that are intended to permanently bond to the paint to both provide a barrier-coating of protection as well as create a clear, high gloss finish. The products available in this category are considered permanent coatings because like your car's paint, they cannot be removed unless you purposefully remove them or you purposefully neglect them.

Definition of permanent in the context of sealing paint
This is kind of tricky just because the nature of discussion forums is for some personality types to read super literal into each and every single word, in this case the word permanent.

From TheFreeDictionary.com said:
per·ma·nent (pûrm-nnt)
adj.
1. Lasting or remaining without essential change: "the universal human yearning for something permanent, enduring, without shadow of change" (Willa Cather).

2. Not expected to change in status, condition, or place: a permanent address; permanent secretary to the president.
n.

In the context that we refer to coating as permanent it means that once the coating is properly applied and allowed to cure and set-up, it will not come off under normal circumstances or via normal wear-n-tear such as careful washing. So in this context, a coating is permanent in the same manner your car's paint is permanent.

The paint on your car is not going to come off unless you abrade it, chemically dissolve it or in some other mechanical means, purposefully remove it. In this same way, legitimate paint coatings are not going to come off unless you abrade it, chemically dissolve it or on some other mechanical means, purposefully remove it.

Traditional car waxes and paint sealants will wear off under normal use circumstances or via normal wear-n-tear such as careful washing. So in the context of and in comparison with traditional car waxes and paint sealants, paint coatings are permanent.

Like I always say... I've seen more new changes introduced to this industry in the last few year than over my entire life and there's more coming.

So always be open to new products, tools and techniques... ask questions and be forever learning.

There's something about it that catches your eye more than any wax or sealant I have ever used. Especially when using C1 & EXO together. The way these products reflect light is extremely captivating.

I am very excited for new products coming out this year. I have heard rumors of some pretty intense stuff.

Here is my next big project, this will get 3 coats of C1 & EXO on top. I'm hoping to have enough time to document even more than some of my previous details.

TrKent what is the cure time for C1 before topping with EXO?

C1 is fully cured in 12 hours. Some have said 3 hours but I am not very convinced of that number so I stick with 12 before applying another coat or topper (C1.5 or C2) or EXO.
