Anyone ever go at late model Volvo paint with a dual action polisher?
I did my hood this weekend and it was hard work, but pretty satisfying.
First time with a DA.

I have light swirls in the hood and shoulders of my 2011 C30.

I was surprised that two passes with Megs Ultimate Compound and a yellow Meguiars 'polishing' pad only reduced the swirls. Didn't take them completely out on my hood. You can only see the swirls in direct, overhead, bright sunlight - but they're there. They weren't bad at all to begin with either. Someone who wasn't a freak would say the car was showroom condition before I started in on it. Im the MAN

I'm waiting for an LC orange pad in the mail and I'm going to try it again. Hopefully, a more aggressive pad will do it. Haven't tried to go at the swirls in the shoulders yet - I have some 4 inch pads coming for that. It's nice not to have a trunk lid on this car. One less swirly panel to obsess about.

Anyone ever try to get swirls out of a late model Volvo? Is the clear really hard or something? I thought for sure a polishing grade pad and a medium compound would do it.
Especially two passes.

Any suggestions for a noob other than go to a more aggressive pad?

Here's some cellphone pics of the car model if anyone doesn't know it. Color callout is Orange Flame Metallic:

How much pressure were you applying?

First pass - not much pressure. Timid. Checked the work and noticed not much happened.
Second Pass - leaned into it and really slowed the arm speed on the passes.
Definitely had some muscle in it.
I only did 6 section passes though. After a while it was hard to see if the Ultimate Compound was gone during the pass. So, I stopped to be safe.

I also tried to come back over with Swirl X on one section of the hood. It looked a little shinier, but the swirls and small scratches were still there under a test light.

After that I just waxed it and wrapped it up for the day.

Get the microfiber system, that will take them out.

Damn - I just saw that system after I placed an order for a bunch of LC pads etc.
Is effectiveness actually better with the Microfiber DA system or just ease of use?

Its just got a lot more cut than a foam pad. Lots of mixed opinions on the finishing wax, you could probably make due with your SwirlX.

Ultimate Compound with a orange pad will cut a lot better than the meguiars polishing pads. To refine the paint further after Ultimate Compound use a white/grey pad with swirl x or Ultimate polish.:dblthumb2:

Also nice car. My friend owns a C-30

Thanks. It's a fun little car. My last Volvo went 221,000 miles before I traded it in. The only reason I traded it in is because the paint was done. I never waxed it in 10 years. Clear was peeling, bird poop etchings etc. Didn't know anything about taking care of paint. Other than paint, the car ran fine.

Now that I know how to take care of the exterior, I'm shooting for 300K on this one.

My Volvo paint was pretty hard, so take your time with it. The orange pad is a light cutting pad compared to the yellow Megs pad.

I really like the C30's and the R-Designs are okay. Wish they made an actual R model like mine. :xyxthumbs:
I feel like the older model Volvo's lasted super long, and the newer ones won't last as long unless you want to throw some big bucks at it every so often.

Never used the microfiber system, so cannot comment on that. I can definitely say the orange LC pads ought to help. If not, you either have wrong technique, or very hard paint. If it is the latter, you need to step up to M105 or higher cutting pad (or both) IMO. Try a test spot before doing anything.

I have a2012 c30, it had dealer scratches from washing, the micro system will be your best friend for this paint. Take your time and clean pads frequently.it took me two slow passes to get what I wanted.

Darn - I'm in too deep with foam pads money wise right now.
I'll have to keep the Meguiars Microfiber DA System on the back burner and do it with foam pads. Sucks, since it sounds like the Microfiber DA is the path of least resistance.
