Generic Rotary ?

Alright I think I want to step up to a rotary, of course I will do lots of practice on other peeps vehicle's LOL j/k.
Ok, now I will be serious. I am looking at a generic 7" rotary polisher at a local hardware store it has 9.8 amp soft start motor, electronic variable speed, 1000-3000 rpm, LCD (speed) read out screen, 6.6 lbs.
I only want to use this on my personal vehicles and occasionally a friends.
Do you think I will get same results as a Mak. or Dewalt with out spending the coin. I just can not justify spending the money for a rotary that will be used once and a while. Do you think quality would be affected? I will be using ccs pads and menzerna polish.

What do you think?

Pep Boys Rotary

I just picked up a cheap rotary from pep Boys (39.99). It's a vector brand, and is basically a Makita knock-off. Soft start motor, and all the things you mentioned. As far as results, it's about the pad turning, not the machine turning it. The cheap rotaries may not last like a Dewalt or other name brand machine. but given equal product and pad, both will perform the same. If you're doing just a vehicle or two here and there, like I am, try the cheap rotary, just consider it disposable. When it breaks decide then if you want another or to upgrade to a name machine. Personally, I would get one of the Hitachi machines because I like the U shaped handle better than the straight handle most have.

if your in no rush and dont want to pay for a new good quality High Speed Buffer look @ Fleabay and look for all the well know brands.. but you must be patient cause deals can be had...

do a little searching as you can pick up a Hitachi for peanuts. Better warranty, bigger power, lighter weight and cost effective. We use to carry it but not coming back or so I heard. Use google or Ebay !
 
I and at least 10 others here use the one from Harbor Freight. It's 29.99 and does the job. I've had mine for over a year now. It's a very solid machine to learn on. If there's anything to replace mine with, it will be a Metabo.
 
To funny Justin this is from Harbor Freight. Did not know if they were a national retailer. It is on sale for $39.
And like I said in the begining this is only for my personal cars. But if a cheap one was going to be trouble I would spring for a Mak or Dewalt.

I too have the Harbor Freight non lcd one. I've had it for a year or more and it's worked fine for the times I've used it. Only other rotary I've owed was an older Black & Decker 6138 which from what I've read became the Dewalt 849. The 6138 didn't bog down like the Harbor Freight does. The 6138 didn't cost $30 though lol.
 
I looked at the cheap ones too, but was fortunate enough to do a couple details and picked up a Metabo. I chose the Metabo because I'm not a big person and couldn't hold the weight of the Makita, DeWalt, and Toshiba.

Like many others have said, brand name rotaries can be had for about $100 used and about $150 new.
