Getting in shape

OP, it sounds like you went a while without exercising, then jumped into some pretty serious running. Give yourself more days off between runs until your knee is happier. Biking is great, and brisk walking is a good calorie-burner as well, while being easy on the joints.

Most important is eating healthy. I went from 242 to 169 in about 6 months just by changing my eating habits. I pretty much ate meat, protein bars, dairy, fruit, and had low carb snacks throughout the day. It was tough at first, but it eventually became pretty easy. Now I definitely eat less healthy which I'm trying to change, but I now know to at least limit how much I eat and am around 180-185. I really want to drop 10lb and get back to where I was though.

Orthopedic Surgeons agree....if you are over 25 and over 135lbs...you should not be running long distances

Too hard on knees and spine

sometimes i run/jog 1-2 times a week and swim 3-4 and cut out as much sugar out of my diet. i've lost 15 pounds in around 6 months or so. if you exercise and eat healthy and try to avoid soda/candy, you should lose weight and the hard thing is keeping it off...

Not the best time of year for me to think about
getting into shape. But to do my part:

Right before the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the
New Year holiday season...I go shopping for some
next-size-up jeans;

and sweat pants---which is kinda funny because
sweating is the last thing I have on my mind.

You dont have to be a teenager to be 5'-9" and 145, the last few seasons I raced my bicycle, I was 142 and 143 respectively and stayed around 150 for most of the racing time.

HUMP

I raced mountain, road, and cyclocross before I gained weight. Can't wait to start it all this summer again. And go down hilling in Arizona this Summer.

Congrats on thinking about getting in shape, first and foremost.

If I can add a few things:

Start slowly, esp with the running. Try intervals of running and walking,
Rome wasn't built in a day. Your knees clearly are not taking to the pounding of running. Biking is a great alternative too, swimming even better.

I'm partial to body weight exercises. Push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, squats, dips, lunges, burpies you'd be surprised how many of these big buff guys can't do 10 solid pull ups. Unlike lifting these gains will STICK TO YOU.

And like someone stated your diet is the key, try to keep it clean and give yourself a cheat day with the one food you LOVE and don't beat yourself up about it. Think about what your putting in your mouth BEFORE you eat it.

I'm no expert, but these changes worked for me. And best of all all can be done at home.

Search BarStarzz, Bar Tenders, Bar Bros. These dudes getting it IN and not a weight in sight and are tore up, best of all the park is FREE.

You might not be in as bad of shape as you thought:

Wow, I'm 42 and 15 push up is good? Hell maybe I'm in better shape then I thoughtIm the MAN

I ride my bike 11 months of the year (I take November off....), riding centuries and climbing Cat 1 mountains in the summer.

I'm probably in better shape than 95% of people here, but I can only do 5 pushups, maybe 6 if I cheat...

Way to make this decision ConeArrow27. I could go on and on about this subject, so I try to keep it short.
Like stated already, what you eat plays a bigger role in health. There is a huge difference in being healthy and being fit. To be healthy, and stay healthy, requires a lifestyle change. The biggest thing is reducing your processed/refined foods, and don't take in empty calories. When you eat you want to eat nutrient dense calories/food. Those are best found in whole foods like fruits and vegetables(plants). Don't focus on calories, and especially don't cut calories. Just make sure you are eating nutrient dense calories that are high carbohydrate(not sugar carbs) and fiber, and balanced in protein and fat. Don't add fats like oils and dairy to your diet. Cutting dairy out of your life is another thing that will help you lose weight pretty quick. A big factor in weight loss for the majority of people is hormones(dairy also packs a lot of hormones that are foreign to the human body) and stress. Stress, good or bad, causes the body to release hormones which can cause fat storage and fluid retention. That said, take it easy with the physical activity. Progress slowly to reduce the stress on your body and reduce the chances of raising stress hormones too much, and physical injury. Something most people overlook when becoming physical/exercising, is getting a physical/check-up by a doctor. If you have existing medical issues or possibly something you don't know about yet, like high blood pressure, then over doing it could be detrimental.
Something I highly recommend is getting fitted for the proper running shoes at an actually running store that can evaluate you and the way you run, and fit you to a shoe the works best for you. I see people all the time that over pronate(foot excessively rolls inward) and are wearing a shoe made for someone that has high arches and or supinates. Knee pain can indicate several things. Everything from the wrong shoes or worn out shoes, to an injured knee or skeletal misalignment. If it were me I would get to a chiropractor before buying new running shoes though, as a chiropractor can assist in correcting an issue that a running store may try to fix with a shoe or insoles.
Biking is one of the best exercises for overall health, fitness, and is pretty much a no impact exercise.
I'm majority(99.9%)vegan/plant based, and having been getting to this point for about a year now. I have lost about 10lbs(now 145) in the past year and don't workout at all. I was about 165 in 2010 when I got out the Navy and was very active. I ran, cycled, rock climbed, lifted weights, etc. Now on a planted based lifestyle and not active more than working/detailing and walking my dog everyday, with the occasional jog with him(less than a mile), I weigh less than I did when I graduated high school in '99 and was running track(less than 5 minutes miles and just over 2 minute average half mile). But in high school I drank soda, ate junk food, fast food and meat. If that's not proof that what you eat matters more than your physical activity then I'm not sure what does. Not bragging, just telling my perspective/experience.
Alright, that went way longer than intended. Hope some of that helps.:)

Funny you should mention harmonies in food. This may sound a little off topic but my wife and I have been talking bout that very thing.

Weve been concerned bout how a lot of food is made. Once we buy a house we are gonna start growing our own veggies and maybe raise some chickens and go fish more. That way we know where the food we eat comes from.

Being "Vegan" only...What a crock!!

I'm glad that Man has dominion over
all the creatures of the Earth.

TO WIT:

1. And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them,
"Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth."
2. "The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered."
3. "Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you.
And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything".

~Genesis 9:1-3

Here's the thing Bob, what does God first state in Genesis about what we should eat? Never mentions eating meat until after the fall of man into sin. He allows it accommodate us. Also, read how ceremoniously meat was supposed to be prepared and eaten. What I state to people is do what works BEST for your body and agrees with your morals. Bottom lines is all people can thrive on added more plants to their diet and cutting out processed animal products. The way the food industry raises, prepares, and markets animal based food in not in accordance with scripture IMHO. The simple fact is that science and life have proven that a plant based lifestyle is most beneficial to all living creators. Funny how people argue the benefits of animal based diet like they take the place plant benefits. I haven't seen too many cures/remedies for disease that include animal based food. Being conscience of what goes into our bodies, and listening to our bodies is key. Have an open mind and don't pick and choose facts/scripture.

•It was after the Great Flood that Genesis 9:1-3 is referencing...
-Not the original "fall from grace".

•Immediately following the above scriptures, it was also commanded by God that man show respectful stewardship over not just the creatures, but plant life as well.
-Mankind has miserably failed on both of those accounts.

•I'd rather put my faith in the Scriptures,
than relying on carnal-minded opportunists.

Conversely:
•You are free to believe and trust in whomever/whatever your morals allow you to selectively choose.

-Please show the same courtesy by allowing me the same freedoms.
