Next Friday, the 22nd, I am taking my test to get my drivers license. Yay! But I am also nervous... Can someone share their experiences on what the instructor looks for?
 
It was easier than the driver ed test at school. Those DMV people don't care.
 
At DMV, it will be the examiner administering the test, not an instructor. Usually, the test will be a written exam to test your knowledge of road laws and regulations, a skills portion to see if you can perform certain maneuvers demonstrating adequate control of a motor vehicle, and a road test. It varies from state to state on exactly how the test is broken down and administered, but usually those are the three areas looked at. For commercial vehicles, the tests are more uniform, than a standard driver's license. It is not too difficult to obtain a driver's license, look at all the people driving out there, some of whom are real morons. I hope I helped you. If your instructor is a female, open her car door, but don't slam her fingers in it ;)

Fasten seat belt

Use turn signals

Come to a complete stop

Don't change lanes in the middle of an intercetion

Don't speed

Don't straggle the line

Honestly it's not a big deal. Mainly just make sure you follow the rules you were taught in Driver's Ed to a tee.

The only drivers ed I ever took involved me stealin the ole mans car in the middle of the night :hotrod2:
 
Just do everything normal and you'd pass.

Easy accelerations, easy braking. Use enough trailing distances and look both ways when you come to a complete stop.

My driving test was literally driving up the street, going around the block and coming back. It took 5 minutes.

Thanks, and make sure I don't accidentaly stall it / buck the car between shifts.
 
Where are you testing?!?!? Here in TN it is a serious joke..... but I hear up North it is a bit more tedious.
 
Up in New England area...... Ive got family up in Jersey and New York and they say it is tough.

I did hear if they try to fail you just shed some tears and they should feel sympathetic and pass ya :dblthumb2:

Can you drive an auto for the test?

I drove my sister's Scion tC instead of my 02 325xi. Reason being her's was automatic while mine was a 5spd.

In Ohio, if you stalled it was an automatic failure. I don't ever stall now (5 years of driving stick), but after only 6 months of learning on a stick; I wasn't going to take that risk.
 
The biggest thing that they told me when I was taking it was to make sure you stop before the cross walks. That, using turn signals, and keep both hands on the wheel. Just relax and enjoy it. Good luck!

He just kept pointing and telling me to parallel, K turn and U turn. I messed up on my parallel parking but he was asleep. lol

Thats a man right there taking the test in a manual.
You talk about a ez test mine was in the parking lot of the DMV no kidding no wonder why jax has the worst drivers.

So much for that therory Anthony :poke: I remember my instructor(TN). He was a military man. You could tell he was in no mood to take no poop off anyone and took his job as serious as an insurance adjuster. It was clipboard city

OP...I thought of a few more things that may help you:

1) Keep both hands on the wheel (10 ~ 2)

2) Take your time. Relax. Don't get in a hurry. Think about every move your getting ready to make

3) If it is a female instructor, right before she enters the car, smack her on her ass and tell her to "get in baby, we're going for a ride" Im the MAN
 
Flash you should be a detective man - good eye. Guess it doesnt matter where you are from, more so who you get as a tester.

Probally what day you go has an effect to. I wouldn't go on a Monday. Friday afternoon would be ideal IMO
 
I took mine in TN and it was a big joke. I had my permit for all of 3 months, and passed the DMV test with one error. This is basically how it went:

Pull out here, take a left here, drive a half mile, take a right (this stuff went on for about five minutes). Really short and basic, I drove through a neighborhood by the DMV.

When I finished I got out of the car and the instructor followed. "Great job Theodore, just make sure you don't creep out into the road so slowly when you come to a stop sign and you will be fine." The instructor said.

She was refering to a stop sign on an angled T section, where a bush had grown to the point that you could not see oncoming traffic unless you were on the other side of the road.
