Glaze/ Filler question

I recently bought a Black 79 Z28 that has alot of swirl marks, micro scratches, etc, nothing I can feel with a fingernail. Paint is base coat/ clear coat. Due to a broken arm I cannot properly correct the paint till at least March. However, I want it to look better now!!!

I'm thinking of using a glaze/ filler to fill the swirls etc then applying a sealer by hand.

I tried Meguiar's show car glaze but it didn't do the trick. I was thinking of buying and trying Poorboys Black Hole next.

Any other suggestions on products I should try or possibly even a different method?

Please remember that whatever I do use has to be applied by hand....

Thanks.

A couple of months ago I got in a hurry with my boars hair brush while washing, and put little fine scratches all over my car (dark blue, almost black). I was extremely busy and wasn't going to have time to correct it for a while, so I broke out my Black Hole. I hadn't used it before, and although I was sick about my paint, it did give me a good reason to use it.

First impression was great. First of all, it smells great! It was very easy to apply, and it truly filled in my scratches. It did everything I'd read about. But...

The next weekend when I washed the car again, all my scratches were back. I use DP Extreme Foam and a cap of ONR with the 2 buckets. I'm not sure if that's a common problem with BH or not.

I really like the Black Hole for filling, and it was very easy to work with. My only complaint would be durability.

Great feedback!!

This isn't my daily driver and probably won't be washed until I get ready to properly correct the paint. So, durabilty probably won't be an issue if it is only affected by washing. I do plan on putting a sealer over whatever I use.

Black hole is sounding better....

Sorry to hear about your arm! I have seen in another forum where someone did very good before and after shots with light swirls and using blackhole. The after shots looked very impressive.....I would say give it a try...heard a lot of good about it!

Black Hole needs to be covered with a sealant or wax. It's not meant to be a last step product.

:thankyousign: I didn't know that!

The bottle says "Black Hole can also be topped with either Waxes or Sealants if desired, for a deeper, wetter and longer lasting shine." That read as an option to me, not a requirement.

This is why I love this forum. The AG products are great, but not nearly as great as the people who share tips like this on how to use them! :props:

I will have to re try this as it rubbed off when I tried it for the same reason.:dblthumb2:

A few things to consider are, Black Hole Show Car Glaze for Dark Colored Vehicles is really designed for Show Cars or in other words, very light swirls. Car show contestants will apply it on the night before or the morning of the show to gain that edge over the show competition (kind of the icing on the cake type of use) so in these situations it is not always waxed over.

Black hole will not completely fill in the swirls on a car as described in the OP's description of his Z-28. There will definitely be an improvement though, however...Polymer paint sealants will typically magnify or exaggerate these swirls that are not completely filled by the Black Hole so a wax such as Natty's Blue that contains light fillers may be a better choice to top the Black Hole with.

Here are a couple photos of a severely swirled car that had Black Hole applied followed by Natty's Blue. This car has never been polished and the owner used such things as dish rags to wash it on a regular basis. The improvement was stellar with this combo. I have tried sealants over Black hole on such vehicles and have been disappointed every time.

most glazes have little to no protective properties. Most are very short lived in most environments too. Perhaps simply a paint cleansing lotion and a good (easy to apply) sealant would be best. Something like Optiseal or Ultima which need no buffing and no real pressure to apply.

Thanks everyone. I ordered black hole today and will give it a shot. I will definitley put a sealer over it. It's not a show car or a daily driver. Just a toy I want to look fairly presentable until someday when I can repaint it...

If doesn't work I will just wait till my arm heals and do a proper correction.

David, as Tuscarora Dave stated earlier, applying a sealant over a glaze will tend to magnify any swirls and scratches that were not filled by the glaze.

I have been using Black Hole topped with Natty's Red Wax on my black paint and also my wife's graphite gray and been have been happy with the results. The glaze and wax were applied by hand.

If you want maximum hiding, go with the wax instead of the sealant and reapply frequently. Just make sure you do not use a cleaner wax or the glaze will be removed.

Thanks, I will use wax instead of sealant.

Thanks again for everyones help.

What sealants have you used over Black Hole? I was going to use WGDGPS. Ideally I'd like to use PB's EXP or one of the Natty's but I don't have those (yet). I have Fuzion and SSII. Would you recommend one of those over WGDGPS?
Thanks.

I have applied EX-P as a sealant over BH. I've never tried any of the other products that you mentioned so I can't comment or recommend as their use is unfamiliar to me.

I almost never use a glaze in my process. The car I posted above belonged to the boyfriend of a client, he was washing and going to use some dollar store wax and i talked him into applying BH and Natty's Blue on it instead. The next day he called me and asked me to bring him one container of each back from the Poorboy's World Detailing Weekend. He's hooked now.

Well, I finally got the opportunity to properly detail the paint on my car.

I still used the black hole after I had removed the swirls, etc. Sealed it with Meguiars Synthetic Sealer.

LOOKS AWESOME!!!

Thanks for everyones help.
