I'm looking to hide some fine swirls and scratches on a '97 red corvette. I do not wish to remove any more clearcoat and am looking at some options.

I am leaning toward first cleaning with Pinnacle Cleanser, then using XMT Carnauba Glaze and was wondering about its filling properties. My other thought is Megs #7 which I have never used. I will be topping with Souveran paste. Thanks for comments or suggestions.

XMT glaze, Megs #7, and Clearkote's RMG are all viable options. They all work well to fill in swirls, and they enhance the paint as well. It should look really nice on that vette!

Abrcrombe,

I did not realize that RMG contained fillers. I am leaning toward XMT Glaze. What puzzles me is that some glazes contain mild chemical cleaners, so how do the fillers stay in place? Is Megs #7 cleaner free? Thanks for the reply.

Just be preparred for the swirls to show back after a couple washes, fillers don't last long. I haven't used XMT Glaze but RMG is real nice, slightly abrassive to not only does it fill good and have a very wet look but acts like a finishing polish as well. There's another vendor who has a really cool glaze right now that's an acrylic and offers pretty much a regular glaze positives but doesn't diminish like a normal glaze after a few washes, guys a spoke with who used it loved it. I'm gonna by some, sent a pm to Scott on here (Killrwheels) as I think AG should have a similar product of their own.

Have used Meg's #7 followed with #26, many times. Very pleased with results results. Just my $.02 Prep is the most important issue. Good luck.
:awesome:

Oh, those hopeless red vettes! Yikes, guess what I spotted in the sun today? Yep, you guessed it ... no, don't say it! No! AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!
Swirls!!!!
(Crying) I hate that sun!!!
I hate that clearcoat. Can someone help me? I want to make them put normal clearcoat on my vette.......
(lol!!)
:)

My issue on this car is the clearcoat is getting thin. I'm looking to hide swirls/fine scratches as best I can without reducing the clear and then top with Souveran and then do 2nd, third coats of Souveran so the fillers are protected as best they can be.

Surfer, the Sonus Swirlbuster product (I think you are referencing) is a swirl remover polish (i.e, abrasive) with acrylic fillers... and should cure 12 hours between applications....I've used it on other cars ..it's good, but took a couple applications with 12 hr. cure between to see results. Not a product I can use here.

Since I have a great deal of experience with Meguiar's products, I can tell you this:

Meguiar's M07 has no cleaning ability. It is a relatively oily product that adds noticeable wetness. It is NOT a product that will cover polisher swirls or anything nearly that severe. In order to avoid leaving any marring when you apply it, use a foam or microfiber applicator. It's a product I've used for many years and it does well given the correct usage.

Glazes with cleaners generally contain abrasives that break down with application. If you properly break down these products, then you will be left with just the oils/fillers and nothing else. Wax or seal to keep the effect.

In keeping with the Meguiar's line, they have a product called M80 Speed Glaze. It has very mild abrasives that break down and leave the finish with a layer of "pure polish" (their term). It gives the finish a rich look and leaves it ready for wax or sealant.

Different vendor, Danase has a version of the CG Creme Glaze that I was talking about. The Sonus one is similar to something like Poorboys Polish w/ Sealant. Even though I'll be buying the Danase Wet Glaze, I hope AG comes out w/ something similar. You can even mix it up between LSP and layers for more wetness and depth, can't do that w/ others as their abrassive qualities will take away your lsp.

If you are not looking to abrade the surface then:

Pinnacle Paint Cleaner --- Megs #7 (Pure Sealant) --- Souveran Paste

you can exchange Megs 7 for Vanilla Moose Glaze by Clearkote which is a hand polish with very light abrasive and some filling capability.

Surfer, PRB, Killr and All, Thanks for the input. I really enjoy this forum because of the input and constructive comments.... heck I've even grown to enjoy Itoman's whining about owning a new C6...lol.

LMAO!!!!:awesome: hee hee hee

ltoman,....just joking of course and thanks for correcting me on the "L". I have worked on vettes and do sympathize....This one is showing signs of clear coat breakthrough and I need to go with TLC, otherwise I'd use my Menzerna 106.

I have used both the XMT glaze and #7 and in my humble opinion the XMT has it hands down. The XMT brings out the color on any car and it makes the paint's finish glossier and cleaner looking. I like #7, but I confess I haven't reached for it since I've been using the XMT glaze. And XMT glaze topped with Souveran is pure bliss. I did a VW Bug awhile back that had paint in horrible condition with bird poo etchings and swirls up the wazoo. It had clearcoat failure in many places and I couldn't get too aggressive with the polishing stage. The XMT glaze really saved that detail. I polished as much as I felt comfortable with and the paint looked better, but it wasn't until I applied the glaze that the color and luster of the paint really came out. After that I topped it with one layer of Souveran and it looked like a different car. I've never gotten results like that with #7. Here's some after pics of that bug with one coat of XMT glaze and one coat of Souveran paste. :)

That's a shame on the clear :( What color is the car?

This summer I worked on a friend's Thunderbird that was doing the same thing. I just layered some M07 on the areas in question, then applied paint sealant over them when I was done with the rest of the polish job. It does make things look much better (though temporary) and has zero abrasive. I'll post the pictures when I'm back on my home PC, if you want to see the difference.

Florida Native and PRB, Thanks for the input from your experiences. Car's red. I am going to try the XMT Glaze. Question: Why are the fillers so temporary, if they are protected with a carnauba or sealant.

While I'm not one for insects, that's a good looking black bug! :applause:
