First, this site is loaded with so much information it's amazing! I am not a professional detailer, just a guy who wants/likes to protect his large investments. I have a 2014 Ford Explorer Limited (Kodiak Brown Metallic) and cleaning the roof is a pain. Therefore, I am going to use the dreaded brush on the roof and the roof only. This brush is dedicated only to the roof. How wrong is this? I appreciate everyones input. Thanks.

I do the same thing for the roof of my wife's SUV. I found a very soft car wash brush with a long handle at a local store and use it to wash the roof and windshield. Without it I can never seem to hit the entire surface from a step ladder. I keep the brush clean to prevent any grit being trapped. From what I can tell, the surface hasn't suffered, but I believe that was because I sought out the softest brush I could find.

If no one is ever going to see the roof, I guess it's not that wrong, but I still wouldn't. At least take the pressure washer there and rinse out the brush well before use.

I assumed you were going to a car wash, if this brush is at home, the same still applies, just keep it clean and make sure it's not nylon or something. You want something like boar's hair.

My understanding is the Montana boars hair brush sold here at AG will not scratch if soaked long enough before use. Somewhere around 30 minutes was the recommendation I read. Pricy, but worth it to speed up the process and keep your feet on the ground.

I have also read that the extension poll they sell as a kit with that brush here is not very durable, and to find your own in that regard.

The brush such a curse word when using on the paint but I know its hard to clean the roof of a suv therefore its alright to use up there cause no one will see the defects but if you have the money try looking into a board's hair brush its safe on paint as long as you soak it 30min before

I do wash my vehicle by hand (I say no to car washes these days). Thanks for the heads up about the boars hair brush.

I bought a microfiber wash pole from Carrand a while back, the extension pole kind of sucks but I really like the chenille style mitt. Works great for the roof of my truck.

I always wash with my montana and gilmour gun with continuous flushing. I dont soak it before and this is the most gentle wash ive seen.

Griots sells a pole with changeable microfiber pads that we use for the roof of our SUV. It works very well.

I've used a Montana boars hair brush for a while now , not all the time though .especially when I had 4x4 . now have a SUV . if used properly no Problems . presoak brush 15-30mins before actual use and you don't need to press down on it so hard like u are scrubbing a deck or something . easy easy . I recently sold my Montana boars hair and got a premium blonde boars hair brush from universal brush .
