Reformatted the computer so wanted to grab an external drive to back some stuff up and also to keep for specific things as well. Toshiba came out with a new generation of portable drives, they are f'n awesome. I kept researching companies like Maxtor, Seagate, Phantom etc, and wasn't impressed by what I found, especially Maxtor products which seemed to have bad reviews everywhere. I found some others much larger in gig size but settled on Toshiba for all the good reviews I saw on even old products.

I grabbed this one, for 100 bucks its great. And very small and thin, perfect for taking with laptop if I do a presentation or travel anywhere. USB powered which is great. Very fast transferring files. Circuit City still has it for $99 on sale, recommend it if you need one. They sold out fast, I grabbed the last one at the store the other day.
Buy the Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable External 160GB Hard Drive - Green and other Hard drives at circuitcity.com

Nice having a fast computer again, few weeks ago had some funny stuff arise where internet was slow and dropping packets when I did a trace, no viruses or anything so no sure what happened. Surfer 1, Bill Gates 0 :righton:

Maybe some IT guys will pop in and help you out......

Viagra may help you too....:D

Hey Surfer, have you dismembered to chassis on that thing to see what type of drive is actually in there?

I'm thinking might be a real cheap way of upgrading my Avic-Z2 to a HUGE hard drive

Toshiba makes pretty good drives. We sell Toshiba, Samsung, Seagate, and Hitachi hard drives. Maxtors and Western Digitals are to unreliable.
Toshiba does make nice looking laptops, but we've seen to many come in with overheating issues.
We did away with selling BIG name laptops because of seeing to many issues. Our solution was to build our own.
Are you still dropping packets? It could be on your ISPs end.

Nope computer is blazing fast again. With the packets I thought it was an isp issue, but it was isolated only to the laptop. I have two desk tops, one in the computer room and the other in another room on the other end of the house. Both ran perfect.

Yeh I almost bought a Maxtor One Touch until I saw all the horrible reviews.

Big Floppy - no, I think it will void the warrenty if I open up.

Warranty, what's that! IF it fails and has all your data on it, they wont retrieve your data
Oh well, worth asking

I don't even see how it could open up, theres no screws or clips and the top doesn't seem to come off.

What kinda of computer is it? Give me make and model.

No worries... think I'm going to take a chance and just go buy one... hopefully it's an IDE type interface rather than a SATA

99% of Toshiba drives tested in upgrades for the Avic-Z1/Z2 work fine

Failing everything else, I'll have a 160GB USB external drive I can either use/sell on

My computer, an HP laptop, DV8305us. Got it about 2 years ago for mainly business use.

I'm loving this Toshiba though, great external drive, 100 bucks can't beat it. Sure as heck glad I didn't buy an Maxtor.

If you took a picture of the under-side of the lappy, I could probably tell you where the HDD is located. Usually where the HDD is you would see a symbol showing HDD platters (Would look like three disks stacked on top of each other. The screw holes are usually covered with little rubber pieces.

Since my puter last crashed (still blame YOU SURFER..........j/FWY lol) I've been meaning to get one in case you jinx me again. Can any thing be stored in these? I'm guessing yes. I'd really hate to lose my porn again :D.

I'm confused? I know where my laptop hard drive is lol. The Toshiba wasn't a replacement, its an extra portable external drive that plugs into the usb.

I new the thread was about the external, but I thought you mentioned something about getting to the internal. You must excuse me, my "day" job is a PC technician for a local business here in Naples. I might have been on the phone troubleshooting while I was posting a reply. By the end of the day my brain is fried.
Our way to try and "combat" lose of data do to failier, is to build PC's setup with Raid1 (Mirroring). If one drive fails, the other picks up where the dead one left off.

Wytstang, that must have been one hell of a porn collection to have a whole year dedicated to it
