Customer with a fully restored 1970 Mercury Cougar. He wants a full correction, interior, engine bay, leather restoration...the whole shabang!

I was looking to buy Leatherique for the leather. For those of you who have used this product...does it work well? I really think that product will please the customer. I'd like to rejuvenate the leather if possible. Make it supple, and soft again.

Also, I haven't specifically done a Cougar before. I've done plenty of other classic muscle...but not a Cougar. Any tips or suggestions is welcome. :dblthumb2:

Is it leather, or did they use vinyl back then? Something to think about.

I was hoping somebody would answer that for me, ha. I asked him if it was leather. He said yes...but for some reason I doubt it.

Pics, Pics, Pics. I know you don't always get the time for pictures as you are extemely busy Kris, but I've love seeing your work as it is, wait for it....

I'll have some pics for sure. I used to post pics a lot more often. It's been tough lately. Phone has been ringing like crazy.

But the good jobs I always try to take pictures of. Find my Facebook page, and you're more likely to catch photos. Thanks! :dblthumb2:

Thanks for mentioning the Facebook page. If I don't see your write up here, I will look for it there.:props:

I have a 1967 Cougar and my original seats were vinyl.. not too sure if they switched over to leather in that year.

I had a 70 xr7 and mine were leather. Well if it was recover and he said its leather well id belive him. We definetally need some pictures. Im a Chevy guy at heart but if I owned another ford it would be a cougar.

I'll know when I take a whiff of the seat, ha.

I'll definitely post some pictures up. I have not seen the car in person yet...but this is one of those customers who was inspired by the work I did to his daily drivers. Now he trusts me and is bringing out the toys! lol

And if they are leather, are they coated or uncoated? I really don't think you will improve the suppleness of coated leather, but you can get it clean and protected which will make it last longer. I have used Leatherique on coated leather and loved the results. I didn't notice much change in the leather but the dirt that came off was amazing. I had previously been cleaning my seats with APC+ 10:1 so they shouldn't have been very dirty but the rinse water after Leatherique was very dirty, so it pulled out dirt the APC+ couldn't touch. But remember one thing necessary for it to work is heat, I don't know how much of that you have in NH this time of year.

Another thing he's concerned about on the 70 Cougar is the white convertible top.

Anybody know of any miracle products to make it bright white again?

Well, the Cougar got dropped off yesterday, and today I got to get started on her.

I'm not finished by any means. I'm only through the compounding stage. The paint was pretty much in the condition I thought it would be.

Seems as though it has never really been detailed before...never mind corrected. There was much evidence that it probably has never seen a buffer except from the body shop...and we all know how that goes, ha. It was full of swirls, buffer trails, holograms, the works.

Here's a few photos to show the progress so far...

Here she is right first thing in the morning today. Looking sad, hazy, swirled, and needing attention.

The compound progress...

The front end finished with compound. The whole first step is done at this point...but this shot shows how much shine was brought back just with compound.

So, that's day one. I'm pooped out. I had to do two passes on every section of this Cougar today. Took me about 8 hours give or take. The second pass was necessary cause it really made a difference. More time consuming...but, I'm being paid for my time. So, no big deal!

Stay tuned. Can't wait to get this thing polished, sealed and in the sun!

I used the MF system to cut today. I wanted to cut down on the dust, and my test spot went really well, and even better after one repeat. I probably could have done one pass using 105, but I didn't want the dust.

Next, is the MF finishing disc with some 205, then Megs #7 on a super soft finishing disc with my Makita. Then WDGPS 3.0 to finish. My choice of Dodo Juice to top.

I take it since it's been restored that it isn't single stage. Is that correct?

If it is correct, then what's the rationale for using #7 at this point?

If it's single stage, why didn't you use #7 before the compound stage? (I suspect that the paint is not single stage...at least it doesn't look like to me.)

Either way it looks like your work is making a big difference already. It should really pop when you're finished with it.

I have used the system. It is very time consuming. To reach the full potential of the leatherique system it is important that you use a hair dryer or heater to heat up the Rejuvenator Oil. I would also drape the seats in clear plastic. I use old dry cleaner bags. This part is crucial. I have done it with and without heat and if you do it without you may as well just use any other cleaner and conditioner. I also sent you a PM.
