Got my menzerna PC kit, have some questions about the pads

  • Put the 6.5” Foamed Wool Pad onto your Porter Cable 7424XP Polisher. Apply an X of Menzerna Super Intensive Polish across the pad. With the polisher turned off, spread the polish on a 2 x 2 sq. ft. section of paint. (For less severe imperfections, you can use the Orange Light Cutting Pad for this step.)

Can i still use the wool pad with 1500 grit sandpaper on more severe scratches? This is assuming that id pick up some powergloss
Menzerna Power Gloss, menzerna powergloss, menzerna S34A, menzerna s34, menzerna compound
 
What pads do you have with your D.A? I would suggest some 5.5 inch flat pads and use Meguiar's 105 instead of powergloss.

Woolpads are not very popular with D.A.'s.
 
This is the kit i have
Menzerna kit, 5.5 lake country pads, porter cable menzerna kit, ceramic clear polishing kit, Mercedes polishing kit

I have some non fingernail catching scratches in a 99 mustang and severe swirling that im getting rid of, so im likely to use 2000 grit + super fine polish + orange pad.

However i know someone who wants to get rid of what looks like a keyed body panel on a 09 wrx that do catch the finger nail, and im thinking it might require 1500 grit sand paper

Feel free to completely school me if im saying something wrong, im very new to polishers in general.
 
Excuse me if I'm wrong, but if you're new to polishers aren't you also new to wet sanding? Be aware that you can seriously screw-up a finish if you don't know what you're doing.

Very good point Heavy, and very true. Sanding isn't something you want to just try out on a finish that you are trying to perfect or just don't plan on repainting. You really should get some hands on training, or at the least watch every possible video that Mike Phillips has available. Two of the most important things you need to keep in mind with sanding/compounding is the rule of thumb and start with the least aggressive approach as not to remove more material than necessary to remove the defect. Keep it clean too! Even though sand paper doesn't look dirty it is once you start removing paint/clear with it. This will help prevent RIDS. I would start with 2000 grit or even 2500 if the scratches don't really catch a fingernail. Don't make your first attempts at sanding on a good panel on your own vehicle. I first started out on a beat-down R6 fuel tank; I would recommend a flat panel from a junk yard or a neighbors door panel on their beat up ride, jk. :)
As for Power Gloss over M105, I have only used Menz PG and have had great results. IMO PG doesn't have quite the bite of other compounds but it really brings out a deep gloss that you could put a LSP right over. The PG can dry out a little quick if you don't mist the pad first, and clean the pad regularly.
Keep doing your homework and don't get over eager to start sanding and compounding on your own ride unless you are willing to live with the possible nightmare of cutting through clear or even base coat to primer. Best wishes.

I say orange because it's cut medium, if you need to step it up a bit then switch to a yellow pad. Even if the scratch isn't removed completely enough of it may be removed and the edges will become naturally rounded causing it to reflect light differently and be less noticeable.

The purple foam wool polishing pad will be most at home on a rotary machine. If used on the Porter Cable polisher it "might" do something but how much I'm not sure. I'm sort of surprised it's part of a dual action kit.

The two Menzerna polishes supplied with the kit are top-shelf products and with Menzerna Power Gloss can handle just about anything thrown at them.

Here's a handy chart that might help choosing the correct product and pad combination.

this is the chart i was going off of actually. i figured i could wet sand 1500 and resolve it with power gloss and the included wool pad or yellow pad

ill do powergloss with a yellow pad before touching sandpaper. I have an extra trunk from a 2002 mustang in good condition that i will practice on

guess im gonna pick up a wool pad and yellow pad during this free shipping thing...
 
Uhh cant figure out how to edit, going to pick up power gloss + yellow pad*... not a wool pad and yellow pad
