GPS system in vehicles...

Hum.. don't know about the us, but here in Canada data plans are very expensive and as far as I know unlimited plans don't exist. Now why would I pay 30$ more per month for a phone nav system that under performs a stand alone unit?

That is interesting, in the US unlimited data is pretty common. I have never had an issue with the google/iPhone turn by turn instructions it even calculates based on traffic. It also works out well with Siri on the iPhone and the ford my touch you can do almost everything hands free. Another plus is streaming pandora through your phone to the Bluetooth enabled radio.
 
Ford and Lincolns systems made it easier to not text and drive as you can allow the car to read text messages out loud. The commands are a bit hard, but they are still good to have
 
The new Chrysler systems will read and show your text as well.
