Scrutinizer here. Pleased to meet you all.
Not a pro by any stretch. Just a guy who likes to take care of his stuff. The reason I'm showing up now is I recently bought a brand new car, a 2016 VW Golf TSI...yes, I'm one of those taking advantage of the current fire sale going on because VW execs did Wrong Things.
I had been in the market for something small, new, cheap, and with hatchback utility, and had pretty much settled on the Fit, when news of the scandal breaks. I immediately think "Hey, Audis were being discounted $15-20k in 1986 after the Sixty Minutes story about unintended acceleration...let's see what happens here." What happened, eventually, is I picked up a car with the Audi A3 chassis and engine right around the exact same price I was prepared to pay for a Fit LX.
The one fly in the ointment, though, is that my new car is black. I've had two car colors my whole life: White, and silver. Now I am faced with the most challenging color there is, so I figured it was time to up my detailing game.
Started out by ordering two buckets with grit guards (black for suds, clear for rinse), Wolfgang's Deep Gloss Paint Sealant, and P21s 100% carnauba wax. Will probably just use the sealant straight away, since winter is rapidly approaching, and will try the wax out come Spring Cleaning. It's funny, I asked at the dealer if they used anything, and the guy said they put on a coat of wax, but if they did, it's the shortest-lasting, least slick wax I've ever experienced. My fingertips practically stick to the surface of the car.
Also new to the collection is FrogTape painter's tape - have never used it before, but I want to keep the rubber and trim on this car wax-streak free.
I have some questions, but I'll head into the forums to look for answers before clogging up the boards with stuff others have already talked about.
Anyway, here's what I'm working with, less than 24 hours after closing the deal. I never knew tires could look so grey:
