Can not speak for other brands of pads, but I've used HexLogic pads with my GG6 with no problems

no, i've used the 5" DA lake country plate on a few different DA's and they have worked fine with an assortment of different pads. while it is best to match the same backing plate with pads, it doesn't mean you have to. it's just the option now with the new Griot's backing plate that it has the holes so it keeps the pad cooler which will help prevent pad failure. out of all the DA backing plates available today for the traditional PC-style DA, i would get the Griot's....

No, not at all. There are so many different types, and brands of Polishing Pads, that all can be used.
But use this as a guideline. A 5" Backing Plate, use a 5.5" diameter Pad of whatever sort-type. Whether it be Foam, or Microfiber.
This then gives a safety margin of overlap on the pad, that you won't be running the hard urethane backing plate into a mirror, door handle, trim, etc.
The combinations of Pads, and Polishes are vast. Let's say you have yourself a fresh bottle of Meguiars M205 Ultra Fine Finishing Polish. That polish can work to slightly different levels of correction dependent upon how soft or aggressive a pad you choose to use with it.
For a vehicle that has very minor swirling, and no light scratches, a white, or even a blue or black LC 5.5 Pad can work. A Pad does not have to be of the hardness of a sanding block to get results. Such more gentle pads will amp gloss, remove light swirling, and prep the paint for a wax, sealant, or whatever else you personally like or want to use.
Need more correction? Then a slightly more aggressive Pad with the same polish mentioned above will work more aggressively to correct that paint finish.
Or, that can be switched also the other way around. A more aggressive polish, with a soft pad might correct better than a fine polish and aggressive pad.
Learn Mike Phillip's "Test Spot", and watch some of his tutorial vids.
Decon first are crucial first steps beforehand, such as washing, tar removal, possible Iron-X wash, Claying and then move onto polishing.

In regards to dealing with heavily oxidized finishes, Mike Phillips has gone to great lengths about how a paint might need to be "pre-treated" first, that such dried out and oxidized paint may need to be "fed" first with a Glaze that can feed and enrich the paint prior to more aggressive polishing.
This "feeding" of the paint can lessen paint removal when polishing with a machine of any type.
A Glaze can do this, but I also feel just a simple hand wax application of almost any sort can also feed the paint with needed oils.
With any good detailer, and what the basis of such is, is to take things sometimes in small steps. To not over aggressively hit paint with coarse-harsh techniques, or products.
Better to do too little, than to do too much.
Take a Rotary Polisher, with aggressive compounds to heavily oxidized paint, and you can possibly be seeing primer, or even metal with just one pass. That's why Mike's technique of feeding the paint beforehand will and can lessen such from happening, and help not removing too much of the crucial and sometimes very little layer of paint.
Always take the most gentle of approaches, and products-techniques to get the job done.

What they say that back plate is awesome.
Cooling holes, and vents and is thin in design to transform maximized energy paint to pad ratio.

I initially just saw a comment that it is only for the long throw Griot's but I retract that, since there are two plates offered; one 5" for the standard Griot DD6 and one 5" specially made for the attachment to a Griot's long throw.

You can put that plate on any PC style platform like your griots 6 inch.
It's a awesome plate, just bought one for my cousin who is a newbie polisher, and he loves it.
