Anyone tried this? Are there better clay bars out there are all the same?

Used Griot's clay for a long time and like it, don't notice a big difference in clays except when going to aggressive types.

I remember reading somewhere that there are only a couple of detailing clay manufacturers, and for the most part, any clay from brand to brand (of equivalent aggressiveness) is about the same. I have nothing to back that up, and have only used 2 brands of clay myself. So take that as you will.

I'm new to using clay and Griot's is the only one I've ever used. Looking at the cost of other clays and how much you get, Griot's seems to give a good amount of product for the money (226 grams). Pinnacle XMT clay is another one that gives good bang for your buck.

Have always used Griots and love it. I used Clay Magic once. Didn't really appreciate a difference.

I heard the same thing and I believe it's true.

I was told by a few different car care manufacturers that Clay Magic holds the U.S. patent on detailer's clay and that they manufacture it to spec. for any companies selling detailer's clay here in the states. I would like to think that info came from a reliable source but you never know.

That's EXACTLY what I heard, too.

I fond it interesting that on the Meguiar's video on claying, the guy says that clay is NOT abrasive, yet everything else I read says that clay is abrasive. I've even seen clay rated as "fine" and "medium" abrasive. If it's not abrasive, how can it remove contaminants?

thanks

The clay itself is not abrasive when used with the QD, ie it will not cause scratches on its own. The nature of the consistency of the clay the contaminate is "pulled" off the paint and then the lube and soft nature of the clay prevent it from causing marring as I understand it. But I could be mistaken bit I don't think so.

I think he means "not abrasive" as in you can't use clay to remove swirl marks. So many Detailing terms are not universally defined and are used differently here and there. "Abrasive" can be a product that is intended to remove swirls or "abrasive" can be anything that can cause a scratch.

Now, all I look for in clay is medium grade and good price to weight ratio, like Griots. I do like to keep some Pinnacle Ultra Poly Clay to use for maintenance on already polished cars that need a little clean up, it's very soft.
