Griots garage reliability

I just read something in a book that bugs me. The author mentions that brush motors (like the one in my Meguiar's) don't last very long.

I did receive 2 spare brushes for the motor but I have no idea how often they should be changed and what the signs are when it is time to change them.

Polishers will likely go for hundreds and hundreds of hours before they need the brushes replaced. I've had it happen to a daily used makita 9227c once on 3 years . I've been told its easy to do but I prefer to take it to the hardware store that services tools(rental shops often service them as well) and it was quite inexpensive. As for when to? The machine will stop working.
The GG6 machine comes with 2 spare brushes!

I remember there is a video showing how to change the brush on a gg3. I think it is similar and quite easy.

So the package will come with 2 set of brushes? Great at least they cater to the main wear and tear components!

No 12 gauge is rated for 16-20 amps for a 25-50 foot cord. Here is a link for cord ratings.

You can use a 50 ft 12 gauge cord at greater than 15 A loads. One issue almost all cord are only are UL listed / rated for 15A classification. It is hard to find a true UL rated 20A cord set due to the connectors, etc.

It's when a product is packaged with enough parts to rebuild the entire thing that one should be really concerned about reliability... :)

If you're talking about the Griots Polisher then don't change brushes on your own--just throw them out. When mine came with a spare set of brushes and no instructions I contacted customer service at Griots--they said the brushes are packaged but are not to be used--if you do it yourself you void the warranty.

Why would you need a cord rated for 20 amps when the circuit breaker will only handle 15 amps?

THe tool itself uses far less than that. for exemple the Flex 3401 uses 7.5 amps and the Meguiar's V2 uses 4.2 amps.

Many houses have 20 A circuits.

It is not uncommon to see 20A bathroom, kitchen, and garage circuits.

A Metro Master Blaster is rated up to 19A and trips a 15A circuit breaker after a few minutes.

Some electrical devices like high powered electric blowers will see a smaller voltage drop (IR loss) with a 12 AWG at long distances. If you are going to buy a good extension cord, get a 12 AWG one.

Wow I did not know that. Here in Canada breakers are 15 amps and if you need more they combine 2 to give 30 amps (and 220-230 Volts).

It's good to know about the Master Blaster. I was not planning on purchasing one but now I know it's not compatible with standard breakers I will avoid it like the pest ;)
