How should the grit guard be used? Should it fit tight in the rinse bucket or turn freely?

Mine are tight and don't turn. I never remove them. I rinse my buckets as is when finished. Others I hear fit more loose. I don't think theres a wrong scenario as long as your guards sit on the bottom of the bucket.
 
Mine can turn, but not move side to side. When I rub my mitt on it I go up and down or left to right rather than twisting. You wouldn't want it to move left to right in your bucket though, that's way too lose.
 
It doesn't matter. The point of the grit guard is to prevent you from dropping your mitt or sponge down into the deeper part of the water with the sediment when working. Other then in the Pad Washer, where it's used to regulate the depth of the pad and agitate against the pad, I think it's a waste of space. When you agitate the water simply by taking your mitt in and out of the bucket, the dirt will move around. There's no reason to put your sponge or mit on the bottom of the rinse bucket.
 
Mine fit tight, and don't make it to the bottom of the bucket. I've had no issues with this.
 
mine fit tight to the bottom that I can tip it upside down and they won't fall out , but then I can grab it at the 2 fingers tab and pull it out . I got the optimum buckets but any bucket which allows the grit guards to be placed at least 3/4 way into bucket should be suffice . as been mentioned the purpose is to keep the gunk at the bottom of the bucket and prevents your mitt/sponge from making contact with all that crap .
 
When the guard bottoms out in the bucket it creates 4 different compartments and does a better job trapping the dirt
 
Since I always get the cheapo Homer buckets, and the grit Guard will float in some of them, I always cable tie a fishing weigh to them so they will sit on the bottom.

Not fitting tight sure makes it easier to clean the muck out of the bottom of the bucket when the washing is done.
 
I have two sets of buckets. One set its loose the others it's a firm fit. Had no issues with either. As mentioned just rub your wash media side to side and not in a circular motion on loose grits guards. I have never had float issues with them
 
depends on the bucket ... most of mine can move slightly in a circle but wont flip upside down.
 
Oh man!!! My HD buckets have the grit guard very loose. Whenever I agitate my wash mitt against the grit guards, the grit guard moves around and turns. It got me thinking that if the grit guard is moving around, won't that be swishing the debris around as well?

What buckets do you guys have wherein the grit guards are tight?

They are tight in my HD buckets. It is obvious that these wash buckets are not precision molded products. They may have multiple molds for these, possible material variation between lots, and molding conditions vary so the dimensions can vary a lot. The shrink rates vary a lot more than plastics like polycarbonate.
 
The Lowes 3 gal white buckets work great with the grit guards.
 
Some of the 5 gallon buckets have a taper that makes it easy to stack. My grit guard will go down to about 5" from the bottom. My other bucket from Tractor Supply, the grit guard will fit in the bottom and turn. I have measured and for the grit guard to fit in the bottom of the bucket, the bottom needs to measure at least 10-3/8" across, The taper one's measure 10" or less.

Good point, I've never looked at it that way before. Mine are currently loose around the sides but do bottom out....
