You will be fine using it on plastic chrome.

For those that have used this product, how do you know when it's time to reapply?

The first thing you will notice is its loss of hydrophobic properties. That is when some tend to reapply. You could use whatever maintenance product you are using on the rest of the car to extend its life. On plastic trim it will start to lose its darkening effect as well.
